Funeral for Mazie Anna Atkins, 93, of Falkville will be Friday, May 16, 2008, at 3 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ralph Henderson officiating.
Burial will be in Union Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.
Mrs. Atkins, who died Monday, May 12, 2008, at Summerford Nursing Home, was born Sept. 13, 1914, in Morgan County to Jess D. Stinson and Lizzie Bell Hill Stinson. She was a member of Tunsel Road Baptist Church in Hartselle. Her husband, Alvin R. Atkins, preceded her in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Virginia Fenton and husband, Bob, of Athens and Dot Segars and husband, Harold, of Hartselle; three grandchildren, Russell Segars of Hartselle, Amy McEniry and husband, Michael, of Athens and Meleah Segars of Decatur; and two great-grandsons, Pfc. Jamie L. Segars of Iraq and Brock Cubillo of Decatur.
Pallbearers will be Bob Fenton, Michael McEniry, Harold Segars, Russell Segars, Brock Cubillo and Miguel Cubillo.

Funeral for Frank Bowling, 63, noon, Saturday at Wheeler Chapel Full Gospel Church, burial in Courtland Cemetery with Jackson Memory directing. The body will be at the church one hour prior to the service. Mr. Bowling died May 11, 2008.

Funeral for Paul D. Godwin, 43, of Hillsboro will be Friday, May 16, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Ridout's Brown- Service Funeral Home.
Visitation will be Friday from noon until 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Godwin died Monday, May 12, 2008, in Kansas. He was born April 17, 1965, in Cerro Gordo, N.C., to James and Carleen Godwin.
Survivors include his wife, Paula J. Godwin; three sons, Ty Raye Godwin, Jeremy Grimes and Ranney Grimes; two daughters, JaDanna Grimes and Michelle Stansell; one sister, JoAnn Godwin; one brother, James Monroe Godwin; three nephews, Jesse Monroe Godwin, Randy Dewayne Godwin and Anthony Jerome Godwin; seven nieces; four great- nephews; eight great-nieces; two grandsons; and three granddaughters.

Funeral for L.V. Moore, 83, of Decatur will be Saturday, May 17, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mitchell Williams and the Rev. John Clotfelter officiating and Roselawn Funeral Home directing.
Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Mr. Moore, who died Monday, May 12, 2008, at Decatur General Hospital, was born Sept. 10, 1924, in Hillsboro to Virgil G. Moore and Lucy Ann Harris Moore. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He farmed and lived in the Decatur area most of his life. His wife, Evelyn Moore; and his daughter, Charlotte Provost, preceded him in death.
Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Hollingsworth and her husband, Don, of St. Augustine, Fla.; two granddaughters, Holly Southworth of St. Augustine and Kimberly McBee and her husband, Craig, of Fairhope; two grandsons, Donald H. and his wife, Danielle, of St. Augustine and Jonathan Taylor of Clarksville, Tenn.; four great-granddaughters Kendall Southworth, Danae Hollingsworth, McKenna McBee and Anna McBee; two sisters, Eva Mae Murphy of Tanner and Gertha White of Phenix City; and one brother, Glennis Moore of Belle Mina.
Pallbearers will be Donald Hollingsworth II, Jonathan Provost, Craig McBee, Reitzel Murphy, Elliott Murphy and Geoff Abrahms.

Joseph N. Portwood

Graveside service for Joseph N. Portwood, 83, of Decatur will be held today, May 15, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Cemetery with Chaplain Rich Thompson officiating and Roselawn Funeral Home directing.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
Mr. Portwood, who died Monday, May 12, 2008, at his residence, was born Nov. 21, 1924, in Morgan County to George W. and Hattie Lee Portwood. He was a member of Sixteenth Avenue Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army 38th Infantry during World War II in the Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland Campaigns. During the Korean Conflict, he served with his National Guard Unit in Korea and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantryman Badge. He retired as Command Sergeant Major of the 142nd Signal Group of Decatur in 1974. He retired from Marshall Space Flight Center Test Laboratory at NASA as an electronics technician and shared ownership of several patents for equipment developed for use in the space program. Mr. Portwood was a member of Decatur Country Club for 50 years. He loved golf and enjoyed working with young golfers. He was an avid Alabama fan. His motorhome was often seen at Alabama games and frequently at the beach in Destin. His brother, Franklin D. Portwood; and his sisters, Mary Cartee, Lena DeGraffenreid and Frances Brown, preceded him in death.
Survivors include one son, George Edward Portwood of Decatur; three daughters, Deborah Thomson and her husband, Bill, Kelly Moore and Suzanne Adams, all of Decatur; one brother, John Portwood and his wife, Sue, of Columbus, Ga.; one sister, Peggy Kizziah of Lompoc, Calif.; five grandchildren, Beth Gasque, Jennifer Chevallier, Ryan Whisenant, Austin Whisenant and Christopher Marthaller; and one great-grandchild, Katlyn Jo Whisenant.
Pallbearers will be Ryan Whisenant, Austin Whisenant, George E. Portwood, Bill Thomson, Matthew Pearsall and Eddie Tiller.
Honorary pallbearer will be Christopher Marthaller.

John S. "Buddy" Speer Jr., 76, of Madison County, Miss., passed away at his son’s home in Humble, Texas, on Monday, May 12, 2008, surrounded by his family.
John was born Oct. 27, 1931, in Decatur. He graduated from Sheffield High School. He attended The University of Auburn on a Navy scholarship and graduated with a degree in chemical engineering. He was a carrier trained jet fighter pilot in the U.S. Navy, on the USS Yorktown. As a “Weekend Warrior” in the Navy Reserves, he achieved the rank of Commander prior to retirement. He spent 17 years as a chemical engineer and spent the next eight years as an instructor/ sponsor of the Dale Carnegie Course in Jackson, Miss. He was a proud member of the Quiet Birdmen - Houston Hanger (QB’s).
John was a dedicated husband, father, brother and grandfather. He is preceded in death by his father, John S. Speer Sr.; his mother, Helen Moore Speer; and stepmother, Carolyn Moore Speer of Alabama. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Sidney Speer, of 54 years; brother and sister-in- law, W. Robert "Bob" Speer and Judy Speer; sister, Carole Russell and her husband, Jimmy; daughter, Kathy Tanner and her husband, Wayne; son, John S. Speer III and his wife, Patti; daughter, Cynthia "Cindy" Speer Mendenhall and her husband, Earl, and Lynn Speer White and her husband, Tom. John was the proud grandfather of five grandchildren, Michael Speer, Jared Speer, Brittany Lewis, Ashley White and Tommy White and the proud great-grandfather of Dixie Leiana Flora-Speer.
Visitation will be held at Natchez Trace Funeral Home in Madison, Miss., on Friday, May 16th from 5 to 7 p.m. To honor John, a celebration of his life will take place at 10:07 a.m. on Saturday, May 17th in the funeral home chapel. He requested that the attendees wear patriotic colors. Burial will be in the Natchez Trace Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Stover, who died Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at her residence, was born April 11, 1955, in Morgan County to Paul Lavene Evans and Sally Irene Marks Evans. She was a member of First Independent Methodist Church in Old Flint and a member of the Cornerstone Sunday school class. Our beloved wife, mother and grandmother has gone home to be with Christ Jesus.
Survivors include her husband, Jimmy Wayne Stover; two sons, Craig Wayne Stover (Monica) and Brent Heath Stover (Lytha) both of Danville; daughter, Brooke Stover McIntire (Phillip) of Hartselle; three brothers, Gary Evans (Donna) of Somerville, Larry Evans and Stevie Evans (Rita), both of Danville; three sisters, Paulette Henderson (Duffy) and Jan Downs (Stephen) both of Hartselle, and Marilyn Melson (Jeff) of Danville; six grandchildren, Allison Stover, Erin Stover, Ryan Stover, Katy Stover, Justin Melvin and Nate McIntire; and many nieces and nephews that she was very close to.
Pallbearers will be Chris Downs, Jeremy Henderson, Jamie Henderson, Josh Melson, Jeffrey Melson, Kin Evans, Jessie Key and Chad Henderson.

Mrs. Vinson died Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at her residence. She was born May 27, 1956, in Ohio to James Welch and Irene Henson Welch.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Vinson; three sons, Jim Vinson, Matthew Vinson and Daniel Vinson, all of Decatur; and eight sisters, Martha Whitehead, Joyce Wheatley, Merry Wheatley, Teresa Fitzgerald, Rita Hill and Glenda Terry, all of Decatur, Denese Tatum of Athens, and Beth Guthrie of Priceville.
Pallbearers will be her sons, and Brad Wheatley, Greg Wheatley and Jacob Terry.
