‘Miracle Worker’ auditions Saturday
Auditions are scheduled Saturday for roles in summer performances of ‘The Miracle Worker” at Helen Keller’s birthplace, Ivy Green in Florence.
Those seeking roles as Helen (a petite girl age 7 to 10) and the blind children (eight girls ages 5 to 14) will audition at 10 a.m., while those trying out for other roles will audition at 2 p.m. The actress playing Annie Sullivan should be 18 to 25, while an adult female actress is sought for the part of Kate Keller, who is in her mid-20s. Aunt Ev is a female 50 or older.
For the role of Viney, the servant, a black female 21 or over is needed. Other roles to be filled include Percy, a black male 10 to 14, and Martha, his sister, a black female 8 to 10.
Male actors 30 or older are needed for the roles of Captain Keller, Mr. Anagnos and the doctor, while one age 16 to 25 will portray James Keller.
All auditions will be held at Ivy Green. Participants should enter through the back gate for the parking lot in back.
Darren Butler of Decatur’s Backstage Theatre will again be directing this play by William Gibson, which will run for six weekends in June and July. Butler plans seven weeks of rehearsal before the play begins.
He said those interested should be available for all those weeks and, except for the role of Helen, plan to read from the script during auditions. A prepared monologue can be performed as time allows, but is not necessary.
