June is Dairy Month, and the milk in your smoothie might even be from Morgan County.
That's because Morgan ranks second among Alabama's top milk-producing counties, with five dairy farms and 11 million pounds of milk produced in 2006.
Cullman is first, with 10 farms and 30.4 million pounds. Lawrence County is in the top four in numbers of farms, with four Grade A dairy farms of 75 operating in Alabama.
The Southeast Dairy Association reports that demand for milk, cheese and yogurt are up across the United States and for exports to China, Southeast Asia, Mexico, Russia and the Middle East.
New flavored milks and milk products, along with more offferings at fast-food restaurants, account for some of the increased demand.
