Today is final day to enter 2005 Spirit Idol competition

You can celebrate July 4 with a bang by becoming the 2005 Spirit Idol. The July 4 competition at the Spirit of America Festival at Point Mallard Park could earn you cash and a recording session in New Orleans.

You have until today to submit an application. There is a $50 registration fee

The winner receives a two-night trip to New Orleans for four, along with a four-hour recording session at Tipitina's there. There also is a $250 cash prize.

Participants in three age divisions — 6-12, 13-17 and 18 and up — perform for a panel of judges July 4 between 1 and 4 p.m. The winner of each vies for the title during final competition at the Miss Point Mallard pageant that evening. Division winners receive $150.

First alternate to the overall winner receives $100. Second alternate wins $50.

Participants must submit their name, contact information (including phone number and e-mail address), age, name of song, 4x6 facial photograph and registration fee to Spirit Idol, Spirit of America Festival, P.O. Box 1776, Decatur, AL 35602.

Performance time is limited to 2 minutes. Accompaniment requirements are a single instrument or a track, said SOA Entertainment Director Tish Hazel.

She added that the competition also is open to dancers.
