Fourteen-year-old Kaitlynn Harris loves formal dresses. She can spend hours in Nathan’s Bridal in Decatur or “The Something Blue Shoppe” in Hartselle.
So when the Falkville High School student found out she was a finalist for Prom Magazine Model Contest and that one of the prizes for the winner was a prom dress, she was thrilled.
Especially after she spotted a hot pink strapless prom dress she adored in the magazine.
“When she saw it she said, ‘Omygosh, I want the prom dress!’ ” her mom, Marty Harris, said.
“She didn’t care about being in the magazine or the other prizes,” she said, laughing.
Harris is one of 14 girls in the contest, ages 14 to 21.
Kaitlynn, who models and acts locally, didn’t even enter the contest herself — her mother did it for her.
“I happened to run across it (the contest) on the Internet. I submitted her picture,” her mom said.
“She didn’t know I submitted it. I guess I’m prejudiced. I think she’s pretty,” she said, laughing.
When Kaitlynn became a finalist, the eighth-grader was surprised.
“I was shocked. I didn’t think I would make it that far,” she said.
Harris’ past work includes a Milo’s Hamburgers TV commercial, the cover of a fiction book titled “Candy Bombers,” print advertisements for Southern Gayles Golf Course in Athens, and roles in local theater. Two years ago, she also was one of 12 finalists for the national BONGO model search.
The model contest, sponsored by Prom Magazine, will wrap up May 31. You may vote online for Harris at www.prommagazine.com/contest/finalists008.htm.
The winner will be announced at the end of June.
