It’s almost time for Spirit Idol

By Danielle Komis Palmer · 340-2447

The sounds of show tunes, dancing feet and applause will soon ring through Point Mallard Park at the fifth annual Spirit Idol competition July 3 and 4 during the Spirit of America festival.

If you hope to be a part of the fun, it’s hustle time because entries are due June 27.

Singers and dancers ages 6 to adult are welcome in the competition modeled after “American Idol” and the classic “Star Search.”

Adults have participated in past years, but the bulk of the participants are children, many of whom know each other from local theater and choir groups, said Tish Hazel, entertainment director for the Spirit of America festival.

“It’s for the kids to be able to get up and show what they can do on stage,” she said. “It’s great practice for them.”

Three judges will critique entrants, a la “American Idol,” and score them from 1 to 10.

Age division competitions are July 3 from 4 to 6 p.m. The divisions are for ages 6 to 12, 13 to 17, and 18 and up.

The final competition is July 4 during the finals for the Miss Point Mallard Scholarship Pageant that evening.

Entrants are allowed tracks and single instrument accompaniment only, with a time limit of 2 minutes and 30 seconds per entry.

The grand prize is $300 cash, $150 cash for second place, and $100 cash for third place.
