'Of Stone and Ore'

The sculpture of Dennis Brickell is on display through Aug. 4 at Carnegie Visual Arts Center, 207 Church St. N.E. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Call 341-0562.

Brickell's sculpture is formed from a man-made stone from a byproduct of steel with red core sand from the side of Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga. Brickell, a teacher as well as a sculptor, shows his Eva School students how to work with the soft-core sand, as well as papermaking, batik, candle-making, clay and ceramics.

He uses a variety of material, topics and processes in his sculpture. Many of his works have spiritual meanings, and some incorporate the pyramids of ancient Egypt.
