Ruben in concert at Calhoun today
American Idol winner Ruben Studdard will entertain Thursday on Calhoun Community College's Decatur campus as part of its 60th anniversary celebration. The outdoor event will begin at 7 p.m. on the lawn in front of Calhoun's Health Sciences Center, on the north end of campus. Studdard, called the "Velvet Teddy Bear," is a Birmingham native who was voted the 2003 American Idol. He received a Grammy Award nomination for his R&B single, "Superstar," and received the NAACP's Best New Artist award in 2004. Opening acts will include local entertainers Dorothy Cole as Tina Turner; Ahead of the Wake; Monkee and the Spank Daddys; and The Alabama Blues Brothers. Those attending the concert should bring lawn chairs or blankets. Vendors will be selling food. Tickets are $20 or $10 for students with valid ID. For more information, visit www.calhoun.edu.
