Rick Talley captured this endearing moment between two giraffes to win $25 in Week 2 of The Daily’s photo contest.

Photo Contest: Week 2
And the winner is ...

The instant Rick Talley snapped the picture, he knew he had captured the fleeting tender moment between giraffes at the Birmingham Zoo.

The Decatur man said he felt like something was about to happen between the two animals and quickly positioned his camera for the shot.

“They put their heads together for a second and nuzzled and then walked away from each other,” Talley said. “It was a real brief moment where we happened to be at the right place at the right time.”

Talley earns $25 as Week 2 winner in The Daily’s 10th annual amateur photo contest. He is eligible for the $500 grand prize, which will be awarded Nov. 11.

The “awe”-provoking moment grabbed judges’ attention with its detail, clean lines and composition.

Talley, 40, titled the entry “Daddy’s Boy,” because it was a father and son giraffe who shared the gentle touch.

This kind of calming gesture is more commonly thought of between mothers and daughters, he said.

“It’s something you don’t really see that often ... and it makes it that much more special to see it between a dad and a son,” he said.

The deadline to enter Week 3 competition is Friday at 5 p.m., with the winner announced Oct. 28.

You have until Nov. 1 to enter the contest. Judges will then evaluate each nonwinning photo and select the best in these categories: children, humor, landscape/nature and animals. Those winners, like the three weekly winners, earn $25 and will be judged for the grand prize.

Nonwinning photos will be available for pickup Nov. 5-30.
