Photo Contest: Week 3
And the winner is ...

Arthur J. Frederick’s trip from Decatur to Antarctica yielded many photo opportunities, and his snapshot of penguins earns him $25 as Week 3 winner in The Daily’s 10th annual amateur photo contest. He is eligible for the $500 grand prize, which will be awarded Nov. 11.

Frederick, who is retired, took a cruise in January with his two sons. The trip included 10 days on a ship with about 100 people. Occasionally, passengers were allowed to go ashore.

At Aitcho Island, one of the last stops, Frederick snapped a photo of gentoo penguins sheltering their young on their rocky nests near the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula.

“The scene just grabbed me,” he said.

“The wind was really really blowing hard — in fact, it knocked a couple of people down,” he said, “and the penguins protected their chicks by keeping them out of the cold wind.”

Judges gravitated toward the photo’s depth and layers — from the rocky land to the crashing waves to the height of the mountains and light blue sky. The contrast of the repetitious black and white penguins to the deep blue water adds visual interest.

“If I could go again, I’d go right now,” Frederick said. “It’s just really an exotic place.”

The deadline to enter the contest is Thursday.

Judges will then evaluate each nonwinning photo and select the best in these categories: children, humor, landscape/nature and animals. Those winners, like the three weekly winners, earn $25 and will be judged for the grand prize.

Nonwinning photos will be available for pickup Nov. 5-30.
