Meeting to focus on reading for children

Children's literacy will be the focus Thursday at a meeting of the Decatur branch of American Association of University Women.

Anyone interested in literacy is invited to the 6 p.m. meeting at Books-A-Million in Decatur.

Beth Wilder will be the featured speaker for the Children's Literacy Guild of Alabama.

AAUW members and others are asked to bring new children's books to donate, because many children do not grow up with books in their homes and lack the foundation to become good readers.

"They do not know what many of us take for granted — the feeling of security in our ability to read, to navigate through the words that make up our everyday world," said Kym Prewitt, founder and executive director of the Children's Literacy Guild of Alabama.

One way the Guild helps is by putting books in children's hands "so they may be transported to magical places and a better life."

For information about the meeting, membership and the AAUW's focus on literacy, contact JoAnn Cummings, 584-6567.
