American Business Women’s Association celebrates 41 years

Wendy’s word

Is that the best America has to offer? An avid “American Idol” fan, I had anxiously awaited the introduction of the top 24 Tuesday night. To my disappointment, the 12 men offered very little, and left me wondering if those were the most talented men the judges could find.

Wednesday came, however, and my confidence was restored. Boy, did those girls bring the house down. I can almost bet who the top contenders will be. It will be a roller coaster ride during the next 14 weeks, but I love the journey.

It’s a blessing to sit back and enjoy the talents of others. I won’t say I don’t watch and wish I had a voice like that, but God gives us all talents. Our gift to the world is how we use those talents.

Let’s see what the “chatter” is for today ...

ABWA

Happy 41st anniversary to the American Business Women’s Association. The group celebrated this landmark day at a dinner Feb. 8 at the Courtyard by Marriott in Decatur.

Charter members were recognized and history notes of the organization were featured. With the vision and commitment of Sandra Rost, the group is going strong and has turned over a new leaf with 30 new members.

For more information on membership, call Rost, 353-9546.

Women’s Connection

Spring Metamorphosis will take place right before your eyes on Friday at Women’s Connection. Join others at Decatur Country Club for a spring fashion show by Maison Morgan.

Country Cousins

More than 17 members and guests of Country Cousins met recently at the community center in Fairview. Hoyt and Dot Maples hosted the event.

Pam Johnson and Zettie Atkinson were welcomed back. Ashley Swafford introduced her baby, Jalyn, and friend Brittney Briggs.

Others attending included Johnnie McElroy, Evalene Orr, Edna and Bob White, Idalene Singleton, Inez Borden, Sandra York, Donna Weeks, Vera Horsley and Lucille Roddam.

Cousins remembered longtime members Bill Whitten and Sleepy Lee.

Orr will be hostess for the next get-together.

Hartselle Newcomers

Betty English and Melissa Legg from Wachovia Bank hosted the Hartselle Newcomers meeting Feb. 8 at the Hartselle Fine Arts Center.

The club welcomed Charlotte Malone from Texas. Alumni members Marcie Kilburn, Kay Burrow and Leigh Ann Rains were also welcomed back.

Hospice of the Valley and the Volunteer Center of Morgan County each sent a special thank-you for the club’s support during the holiday season.

Special guests were Jennifer Sittason from the Hartselle Fine Arts Center and Faye Walker from the Historical Society.

They spoke about the preservation of the historical Burleson School building as a place for the arts to be enjoyed, as well as the mission of the Hartselle Fine Arts Center and the Historical Society. David Burleson, son of F.E. Burleson, also spoke about the history of the school where his father began his teaching career in 1931.

Upcoming events supporting the Fine Arts Center include the seventh annual dinner and auction on April 21; annual Camp Art-Selle for children June 2; fashion show and luncheon in August; and Hartselle Police Department’s Haunted House in October.

February’s day trip was organized by Annette Dean. Members traveled to Huntsville for lunch at the Heritage Club and enjoyed a day of shopping, while others toured the historic Twickenham District and beautiful Jones Valley in Huntsville.

Newcomers will meet again March 8 at 10:30 a.m at the Hartselle Depot. Special guest speaker will be Mayor Dwight Tankersley. Following the meeting, everyone is invited to enjoy lunch at Giovanni’s Italian Grill.

First United Methodist Church will provide child care. For more information, contact Sue Kalber at 751-0295 or Sandy Johnson at 751-4540.
