DAR honors outstanding students
Wendy's word I love a baseball cap and think nothing of donning one most days. As usual on a recent rainy day, I threw it on and ran out to pick up a gift at what I would consider to be a prominent Decatur establishment. To my surprise, I was not greeted very warmly by the sales associate. Several days later I left the ball cap at home, fixed my hair and applied my makeup. Same store, same sales associate, but would you believe, an entirely new attitude. Was I not "dressed" the part days before? Did she not think I was "good enough" to shop in that particular store? My, my, are some people so shallow and quick to judge. Perhaps this saleswoman should come from behind the cash register and clothing rack and open her eyes to what's really important in life. Here's a hint: It goes way beyond someone's outward appearance. Now let's see what the "chatter" is for today ... DAR recognizes students The Stephens Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, recently honored outstanding area students at a tea at the Decatur Country Club. Categories of acknowledgment included Good Citizens, Junior American Citizens Entrants and JROTC Award Winners. Recognized as DAR Good Citizens were: Virginia Tyler Godwin, daughter of John and Amy Godwin, from Decatur High School, Tina Kellet, counselor; Ashley Elaine Pentacost, daughter of Bracey and Sherry Pentacost, from Decatur Heritage Christian Academy, Melissa Ross, counselor; Jessica Lauren Pritchard, daughter of Gregg and Connie Pritchard, from West Morgan High School, Martha Lynhart, counselor; and Ethan Lee James, son of Ken and Julia James, from Falkville High School, Ken James, counselor. James was named overall winner and shared his essay with the group. Ann Martin serves as DAR Good Citizens chairman. Junior American Citizen entries were submitted by John Michael Harbin, accompanied by mother Sandy Harbin, and Meg Guintini, accompanied by mother Amy Guintini, both fifth-grade students at Walter Jackson Elementary School. Billie Davis serves as Junior American Citizens chairman. DAR JROTC winners were Kasey Bolen, accompanied by her mother, from Austin High School, retired Lt. Col. James Walker, JRTOC instructor; Joni Gillespie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gillespie, from Lawrence Country High School, CW3 Bill Baker, JROTC instructor; and Candace Orr, accompanied by her mother, Carolyn Orr, from R.A. Hubbard High School, Lt. Col. Robert Robinson, Sgt. and Mrs. Willie Johnson, instructors. Alice Roberts serves as DAR JROTC chairman. The meeting was led by Regent Jane Rowe, with hostesses Bunny Edwards, Mary Bingham, Pat Brown, Edna Harris, Ann Jenkins, Peggy Johnson, Alice Roberts, Mary Shaw, Dorothy Sipes and Bertha Stimson. Forty-nine people attended the event. Phi Delta Chi formal "Starlit Paradise" was the theme for Austin High's Phi Delta Chi winter formal at Quail Creek Resort. Freshman members attending were Haley Barnette escorted by Blake Summerel; Stephanie Bevans escorted by Austin Mabe; Alli Bramlett escorted by Ethan Netherton; Courtney Campbell escorted by Levi Cook; Francie Caradine escorted by Jack Roberson; Katie Beth Doss escorted by Kyle Thibodeaux; Holly Harris escorted by Austin Day; Julie Johnson escorted by Andrew Lilly; Briley Lovett escorted by Riley Howard; Jamie Phillips escorted by Trey Walker; Ashton Reist escorted by Tyler Kilgro; Rebeckah Roberts escorted by Richard Petty; and Jenna Villarreal escorted by Trent Standridge. Sophomores included Shanna Dunn escorted by Trey Richards; Chelsea Harvell escorted by Matt Head; Jenna Martin escorted by Alex McCay; and Emily Stephenson escorted by Matthew Frazier. Juniors were Ali Barnette escorted by Rob Dishman; Crystal Deuel escorted by David Adams Roberts; Haley Howell escorted by T.J. Paysinger; and Kelsey Jefferys escorted by Austin Green. Outgoing officers and their dates were Meg Warren escorted by Aaron Richards; Jordan Villarreal escorted by Jake McCay; Chelsea Rogers escorted by Matt Kilgro; and outgoing President Rebecca Stephenson escorted by Braxton Lovett. Newly elected officers and their dates included Sergeant at Arms Leah Brown escorted by Steven Bibb; Scribe Lillie Pike escorted by Mathew Tittle; Chaplain Rachel Teague escorted by Justin Bishop; Treasurer Erin Phillips escorted by Jud Stephenson; Secretary Chynna Jones escorted by Lance Smith; Second Vice President Taylor Keck escorted by Kayne Stuart; Vice President Katelyn Free escorted by Clay Womack; and President Hannah Wirey escorted by Caleb Ford. Spring makeup at ABWA American Business Women's Association will bring a new "face" look at the next meeting Thursday at the Courtyard by Marriott. The program will be presented by the Parisian Clinique Department, looking at fresh makeup for the spring. Join in the fun beginning with the social at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting at 7.
