UA freshman receives scholarship

Wendy's word

Baseball was the buzz around my house last week, and boy, did I receive an education in how the Dixie Youth draft works. Having been on the same T-ball team the past two years with the same group of boys, it was difficult to part ways, watching different ones selected for different teams.

I wasn't sure how my son would react, realizing it was not only a new league of machine pitch, but new teammates as well. Once again, his 6-year-old wisdom took him well beyond his years, impressing me and putting my heart at ease.

Asked if he was excited about his new team and the new season ahead, he simply said, "Mom, Dad's coaching, and I know he's excited. I'm playing, and I'm excited. We'll be together having fun, and that's all that matters." My goodness, we sure lack that kind of perspective as adults.

It really is all about the love of the sport. With that said, "Take me out to the ballgame."

Now let's see what the "chatter" is for today ...

Panhellenic scholarship

It's that time of the year when students begin thinking about scholarships, and Decatur Panhellenic Council has made that a reality for one local woman.

Emily Frost, a freshman at The University of Alabama, received a $250 cash scholarship, recently presented by Mary Pettey on behalf of the council. A member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority, Frost was a 2006 graduate of Decatur High School where she was the yearbook editor and a member of the National Honor Society.

"She is a great girl and a wonderful representative of Decatur," Pettey said.

Women must have participated in Greek recruitment during the fall 2006 or winter 2007 to be eligible for the scholarship.

For more information on the Decatur Panhellenic Council, the sorority tea and scholarship information, call Pettey at 350-9013.

Audition calls

Plans are under way for the seventh annual Spring Benefit Dinner for the Hartselle Fine Arts Center.

This year's theme is "A Skip Across Broadway," and talented members of the community are being sought to make the night a reality.

Singers, dancers, actors and more are invited to share their talents at the auditions tonight and Monday night, 6 until 8, at the Hartselle Fine Arts Center, 308 College St. The benefit performance is set for April 21.

For more information, call Ali Hampton, 476-6038.

Daughters of Confederacy

The Joe Wheeler Chapter 291 UDC met recently with 11 members present and three visitors. Hostesses were Dorris Chitwood and Linda Clemons.

President Glendora James called the meeting to order, followed by Chitwood and James leading the salute to the flags and rituals.

In observance of Sidney Clopton Lanier's birthday, Judy Blackwell read the poem, "The Dying Words of Stonewall Jackson" written by Lanier.

Kay McCarley, vice president, read the president general's message from the UDC magazine, followed by an informative program on "Confederate Civil Servants" by Linda Edwards.

Betty Lovvorn made information packets of upcoming projects of the Little Joe Wheeler 764 Children of the Confederacy available to members. They are collecting Campbell Soup labels, Box Tops for Education, postage stamps and can tabs for various projects.

Sarah Gray donated two books, "When I Come Home," based on the true story of Lucinda Jane Boone Pless, and "A Confederate Heroine" by Judith Carney. One book was sent to the Helen Warpole Brewer Library at the UDC Memorial Building in Richmond, Va., and the other will be donated to the Wallace State Library Archives in Hanceville. The Chapter's Founder's Day Brunch will be Thursday at the Decatur Country Club. This year will mark the 108th year since the formation March 29, 1899.

Several members also plan to attend the annual Joe Wheeler District on Saturday in Athens.

That's all for now. It's been great "chattin" with ya! Let me know what is going on in your little corner of the world. Just e-mail me at ddchatterbox@yahoo.com, or call me at 350-5730.
