Daughters of Confederacy attend regional meeting
Wendy’s word
His name was Swimmy. I had never read the story, but upon discovering it during bedtime reading with my son the other night I fell in love with the message.
He was a little fish separated from his school. After swimming around lonely for a few days he met some new friends, the red fish. They didn’t get out much for fear of bigger fish.
Swimmy suggested they swim very close, disguising themselves as one big fish. Swimmy would be the eye. Together — that was the key — they traveled the oceans, overcoming all that came their way.
Sometimes by ourselves we feel insignificant and small, but when we work together with others we can accomplish great and amazing things.
Let’s see what the “chatter” is for today ...
Daughters go regional
Members of the Joe Wheeler Chapter 291 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy went regional. They attended the Alabama Division’s Central Regional meeting recently in Birmingham at The Club.
The day was headed by Division President Lorraine Ennis, with Joyce McCullough assisting in the rituals. Karen Shallenberg, Fay Yurcheck, Kay McCarley and Tonnia Maddox led salutes.
Those attending from the local chapter were President Glendora James, Vice President Kay McCarley, Recorder of Military Service Awards Judy Blackwell, Historian Bettye Moore, Kathy Jones, Linda Edwards and Savann Sherrill.
Attendees attended workshops focused on helping new and future chapter officers. Everyone also took part in a silent auction to benefit the Randolph Relief Recipients.

Herb Society
The Morgan County Herb Society met recently, with President Anne Edmunds calling things to order. Judi Owens presented facts about Saint Patrick and Saint Patrick’s Day.
Visitors Lenny and Mina Williams, Dovie Key, Etha Moultrie and Dora Powers, along with new members Sylvia Walker and Nancy Waldron were welcomed.
Work has started on the herb bed and should be finished by the April meeting. Members are asked to identify any herbs they would like saved. Herbs not marked will either be given to the Master Gardener group or sprayed out. Nancy Crosier reported that Anders Excavating has agreed to donate the mulch needed to top off the bed.
Guest speaker Janice Key-Walding spoke about the science and art of essential oils to promote well-being and healing. She was careful to caution about what not to do with essential oils. For instance, never use oils undiluted on the skin. Most are strong enough to cause a burning sensation. Lavender oil is the exception to this; it’s good for skin problems and is soothing and calming. She also explained not to confuse fragrance oils with essential oils.
Before leaving, Crosier won the door prize provided by Edmunds.
The Herb Society meets the first Wednesday of each month. The April 4 meeting will be a field trip to Everything Under the Sun Nursery. Those interested should meet at the Alabama Cooperative Extension office, 3120 Alabama 36 W., at 10:30 a.m. Please bring a sack lunch.
