ACS volunteers lobby for funding

Wendy’s word

Life is good. It’s the latest in fashion trends, and the message is a great one. Whether running, biking, walking the dog, camping, planting flowers or simply wearing flip-flops, life can be great when time is spent doing what you love.

For more information on the latest styles, check out the Web site at www.lifeisgood.com. I think you’ll love what you find.

Now let’s see what the “chatter” is for today ...

ACS at Lobby Day

American Cancer Society volunteers, including Amy Balch from Morgan County, recently visited the state capital to represent their communities at Lobby Day 2007. On March 20 volunteers met with state lawmakers, such as Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur, to ask that cancer be made a state priority.

Volunteers and lawmakers discussed funding for a colorectal screening program for the underserved and uninsured, funding for the Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, expansion of Medicaid benefits to include coverage of smoking cessation recipients, and building support for a comprehensive statewide smoke-free law.

Lobby Day is a statewide event to engage state legislators to get involved in the fight against cancer. “This day allowed us to get the information to our legislators about the needs of cancer patients and how the state government can help,” said Patty Stutts, local volunteer. “Last year we were able to obtain never-before-received funding on the state level for the breast and cervical program, which allows more working age women to get mammograms and pap smears.” For morel information on Lobby Day and other cancer programs and services, call (800) ACS-2345 or visit the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org.

Children matter

Monday will be a great time to show that children always matter in Morgan County. Beginning at noon at the Morgan County Courthouse, enjoy free hot dogs, chips and drinks.

Sponsored by Morgan County DHR and Parents and Children Together, this will be a great time of fellowship with others in the community and a time to learn how we can better serve our children.

Women’s Connection

Women’s Connection will meet Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at Decatur Country Club.

Guest speaker Judy Barth of Dayton, Tenn., a beauty and nutritional consultant, will share the message “From Desperation to Resolution.” She will describe learning life truths in peculiar ways, some of which occurred in the midst of dealing with five teenagers.

Musical entertainment will be provided by the Hartselle High School Performers under the direction of Wanda Thompson.

The cost is $13. Reservations can be made by contacting Nancy Fortune at 340-0113 or nbfortune@mindspring.com or Maxine Hall at 773-4978 or Hornet@ieee.org. Complimentary nursery care is available.

Big Band Bash

Thursday will be a band party at the Princess Theatre Center for the Performing Arts, as area bands present the annual Big Band Bash beginning at 7 p.m. This year’s event celebrates the 14th annual Bash and features more than 60 musicians from the University of North Alabama, Studio Jazz Band and Hartselle High School Jazz Band. Performances will also include a special tribute to the Big Band Bash founder, the late Paul Stroud. Clay Sloan, assistant band director at Austin High School, will coordinate the program.

Each band will perform full sets of classic big band music from the ’30s and ’40s, as well as current jazz selections. Committed to preserving the rich heritage of big band music, this year’s Bash is made possible by a grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

For reserved tickets, call the Princess Theatre box office at 340-1778, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Tickets are as follows: $16 for main floor, $14 balcony, $10 upper balcony and $10 for students and teachers. Senior citizen and group rates are available. Tickets are also available online at princesstheatre.org. For more information on this and other shows, visit www.princesstheatre.org or contact Lindy Ashwander at 350-1745 or lindy@princesstheatre.org.

Hartselle High reunion

The Class of 1997 at Hartselle High School is planning a 10-year class reunion for July 13-14 at Quail Creek Golf Club. Organizers need help locating many “missing” classmates.

If you have any details on a ’97 graduate, please call Julie Tomlinson Lindeman at 606-2170, Brooke White Middlebrooks at (832) 741-8689, or Brad Murphy at 654-9224. Formal invitations will be mailed in mid-April.

That’s all for now. Hope you have a superbly blessed week. It’s been great “chattin” with ya! Let me know what is going on in your little corner of the world. If it’s special to you and features any of the great people who live in our community, then it will make a great Chatterbox item. Just e-mail me at ddchatterbox@yahoo.com, or call me at 350-5730. I look forward to hearing from you.
