Being beautiful can be so difficult, especially when Mom doesn’t know how to operate the camera properly. Destiny Jones tries to help her mom, Kelly Christy, adjust the camera to take a picture of her and her friend, Sarah Thompson, at the sixth annual Salvation Army Beauty Walk on March 27. Seventy-four contestants competed in the event, which raises funds for the Salvation Army.

Fashion show, auctions to benefit cancer awareness fund in memory of Brooke Hill
Wendy’s word
I didn’t know they came in pink, but it makes perfect sense. The delicate, pink tips on the dogwood paint the perfect picture of all that Easter celebrates.
This masterpiece of a bloom, beautiful and perfect, yet marked with what appears to be blood-stained tips, reminds us of the nail-piercings that hung our Savior to the cross.
What a price he paid for our failures and sins. Don’t, however, forget the rest of this awesome story. On the third day he rose. He was resurrected, and today we rejoice in the miracle and majesty of his promise.
Enjoy a blessed Easter Sunday. Now let’s see what the “chatter” is for today ...
Remembering Brooke Hill
Brooke Hill was a Decatur wife and mother who lost her fight to ovarian cancer two years ago at the young age of 32.
Family and friends established the Brooke Hill Ovarian Cancer Awareness Fund with a sole purpose of funding events to raise awareness of the symptoms and treatment available for ovarian cancer.
On Saturday, Burningtree Country Club will host the second annual Brooke Hill luncheon with the theme “My Body, My Style, the Focus Is on You.” Featuring a fashion show and silent and live auctions, this promises to be a beautiful celebration of Hill’s life, as well as an educational session on the most up-to-date information regarding ovarian cancer.
The silent auction will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by the fashion show, luncheon and live auction from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. The cost is $25.
Modeling fashions provided by Nettie’s Place, Goody 2 Shoes and Eloise & Henry will be Donna Robertson, Ann Sink, Jean Robertson, Annette Ashworth, Brenda Gray, Leslie Heidecker, Faith Heidecker, Myrna Hermetz, Amy and Jack Orr, Megan Youngblood, Courtney Tomberlin, Kathy Williams, DeeDee and Ian Jones, Ava Bryant, Vikki Bautz, Sybil Sartain, Alicia and Addie Nails, Gracie and Emily Anne Roberson, Mary Frances and Katie Eyster, and Jill Brown.
Making a special modeling appearance will be Hill’s daughters, Kayla and Peyton Hill.
Artist Jessica Hales will present her painting technique that will be up for auction at the end of the show.
Ross Raley will emcee, with Gail Ward providing music on the grand piano.
J. Michael Straughn Jr., M.D., and Beth Hosmer, R.N., who treated Hill, will head up a medical panel discussion.
All proceeds will benefit the Brooke Hill Ovarian Cancer Awareness Foundation.

This will include the charity of the month, Animal Friends Humane Society.
Other events coming up will be the welcome coffee April 18 at 10 a.m., a lunch at Decatur’s new Maria Bonita restaurant April 25 at 11:30 a.m., and day trips to the Daylily House and Summit Shopping Center in Birmingham.

Garden tips at ABWA
The American Business Women’s Association will meet Thursday at the Courtyard Marriott. Dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $15.
The program will be presented by Amy Lovelace, Master Gardener and owner of Sugar Magnolia’s. She will share ideas and tips for beautiful spring flowers and gardens.
Call Sandra Rost at 353-9546 for reservations.
Feline fun
Decatur Public Library will host Feline Fantasy, a celebration of cats for cat lovers of all ages, Monday. From 3 to 5 p.m. Alabama author Sondra Gray will talk about and sign copies of her first book, “According to Punkin,” the story of a cat she and her husband rescued from a loading dock in California and took on the road in their big rig.
At 6 p.m. cat owners are invited to bring their cats (in a pet cage or leashed) for the Feline Fantasy Parade. Judging will be held in these categories: best Punkin look alike, best trick, best cat/owner look-alike and best groomed. Each cat will receive a certificate, and winners will be awarded prizes from Pet Depot. For more information, call the library at 353-2993.
Herb Society
The Morgan County Herb Society met April 4 and took a field trip to Everything Under the Sun Nursery. Owner Kim Allen welcomed members and invited everyone to browse the greenhouses and the gift shop. Each guest received a small “bubble bloomer” for rooting herbs or holding fresh cut flowers.
Following the nursery visit, Judi Owens, Maude Brooks and Nancy Crosier enjoyed a picnic lunch. The next meeting is May 2 at the Extension office at 10:30 a.m.
