Blues pianist is Decatur man’s 50th birthday wish
Wendy’s word
Everything was in full bloom, and bam! That late winter freeze came in last week and shocked us all. I commented on this to a friend. Her response, “I hadn’t even noticed. I’ve been so busy.”
How in the world can you not notice the nature around us? I am amazed. Do we stay so fast-paced that things just go by in a haze? As quickly as spring appeared, it was swept away almost overnight.
Of life’s sweetest gifts, nature is one of the most precious. Do not put blinders on and miss the spectacular show. You will be sorry.
Now let’s see what the “chatter” is for today ...
Birthday wish
When Memphis pianist Di Anne Price agreed to play and sing the blues, Guenther Huber got his 50th birthday wish. Wife Erika Huber knew this would be the perfect gift for Guenther at the party she planned for him at Curry’s in Decatur.
“Price entertains weekly at Cielo, Guenther’s favorite Memphis restaurant, so for her to make the trip to Decatur was perfect,” she said.
Huber, who relocated to Decatur 17 years ago from Germany, was happy to welcome special guests from his hometown of Kisslegg. Joining the celebration was his mother, Cecilia Huber, brother Wolfgang, daughter Nadine Delle with partner Mario Fontain and grandson Ramon, and daughter Sarah Kullmann.
Decatur guests included sons Daniel Delle and Joshua Huber, daughter Natalie Huber, in-laws Peter and Carolyn Jenke, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Underwood, Mr. and Mrs. James Turner, Mr. and Mrs. Ashton Dement, Mr. and Mrs. Clint Chapman, Col. and Mrs. John Henningsen, Rick Jarrell and Dr. Jeanine Loncar, Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey English, Mike English, Beth Lemmond, Ron Turney and Jason Baker.
Guests feasted on a buffet of lollipop lamb chops, pastrami sliced smoked salmon, smoked tuna dip and vegetable brochette. Dessert included an assortment of cheesecakes.
Following the party, Guenther and his family enjoyed a trip to Point Clear.
Jewelry sale
The Foundation for Mental Health will host a jewelry sale Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the first-floor lobby at the Somerville Place office complex on Somerville Road. The fundraiser, presented by Fashion Jewelry Fundraisers, will feature items for $5 and $10. The public is welcome, so come by pick up some perfect spring accessories. Mother’s Day and graduation are right around the corner. This is a great time for those special gifts. For more information, call Amy Turner at 773-8754.
Donnell House fundraiser
Coming up Friday, the stage will be set at the Donnell House for a spring fundraiser luncheon and fashion show hosted by “All About Me” and “Shoe Gallery II.” Festivities begin at noon, with the fashion show at 12:30. The cost is $12, with pre-paid reservations taken through Tuesday. Seating is limited.
Following the loss of funding from the Alabama Historical Commission, the Donnell House board now relies on rentals, donations and fundraisers to help repair the leaky roof, replace windows and more.
Reservation checks should be made payable to Donnell House Inc. and mailed to Pat Lewis, 16906 Oakdale Road, Athens, AL 35613. For information, contact Jacque Gray Reeves at 536-5737 or on Fridays at the Donnell House, 232-0743.
Women’s Chamber
The April luncheon meeting of the Women’s Chamber of Commerce is noon Friday at the Decatur Country Club.
Members and their guests will be greeted by hostess representatives from Renasant Bank. Tammy Eddy, Women’s Chamber member and local antique store owner, will present a program featuring tips on “Decorating for Summer Entertaining.” Luncheon reservations can be made by calling Brenda Hartman, 351-6581, by Tuesday.
You may also want to go ahead and mark your calendar for the Spring Pilgrimage Tour of Homes at Cityview Estates on April 29 from 1-4 p.m. Final plans for the tour will be detailed at the April luncheon by Tammy Reeves, tour chairwoman. Get your $10-in-advance tickets from Jimmy Smith Jewelers, Sam Frank & Moore, Parisian or the Convention and Visitors Bureau; they’ll be $15 on tour day.
Vintage Princess
Mark your calendars for April 27 at 6:30 p.m. when the Sexton Building on the river is the setting for the fourth annual Vintage Princess. This wine tasting and silent auction that benefits arts education at the historic Princess Theatre has a new sponsor: Mercedes-Benz of Huntsville.
Laurie Davis is chairwoman, with Anne Marshall and Pat Patterson assisting. The silent auction will be headed by Jennifer McCain, while Willa Dockery is in charge of decorations.
Rick Paler is rounding up the wine, while Chris Smith of Supreme Beverages will be doing “upscale” beers and microbrews. Other volunteers include Kappie Dunn, Nicole Shelton, Penny Haddock, Kate Klepper Cole, Linda Livingston, Jeanie Fincher, Joan Barksdale, Margaret Wenzler, Jeanette Dougherty, Nancy Hagood and Blythe Bowman.
Call the Princess, 350-1745, to make your reservation.
