Local man elected to dairy board

Wendy’s word

Thank goodness he is gone. My faith was restored in the American public Wednesday night when more than 33 million voters said goodbye to Sanjaya Malakar.

For weeks he was a joke and made a complete mockery of the very show he had hoped to represent. It was absolutely ridiculous to think he could compete on this so-called talent show.

Many say the votes came in from young, pre-teen girls who thought he was cute. If cute is what they were after, then they should find another show. This is “American Idol,” not American Weird and Wild Hairdos!

In celebration, I join the millions of fans who came together to stop the insane trend of keeping him on the show week after week. I will never understand why some found joy in trying to sabotage one of America’s top-rated shows. At least now viewers have spoken, making it clear that the show should move forward based on talent and talent alone. Enough said. It’s really not worth wasting another breath.

Let’s see what the “chatter” is for today ...

Dairy board

The 2007 annual Dairy Farmers of America Inc. meeting was held recently in Kansas City, Mo., where James “Mickey” Childers of Somerville was elected to the cooperative’s board of directors.

Every year, members at the local level elect dairy farmers to represent them in DFA’s leadership and governance structure. DFA’s board represents the interests of the member-owners, which are located within DFA’s seven geographic marketing areas. Board members provide direction, set policies, establish financial structure, approve capital budgets and establish duties and responsibilities for DFA’s governance structure.

Dairy Farmers of America Inc. is all about milk and the nearly 21,000 dairy farmers who produce it. For more information, call (816) 332-6455 or visit www.dfamilk.com.

Plant, yard sale

Priceville High School Band Boosters will sponsor a plant and yard sale Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Priceville High School.

It will be the perfect day to shop for tropical plants, hanging baskets, ferns, color bowls, bedding plants, terracotta pottery and more. In addition, the yard sale is loaded with all kinds of bargains.

The public is invited. All proceeds from the sale will benefit the Priceville marching band. For more information, call Janet Hale at 303-0070.

Celebration luncheon

The Athens Ladies Civitan Club will host a Celebration Luncheon for Administrative Professionals on Wednesday at noon at Central Church of Christ, 320 U.S. 31 N. in Athens.

Tickets are $25 in advance and will feature a festive lunch of Caribbean chicken, Roma tomato salad, fresh roasted asparagus, assorted breads with cream cheese, turtle cake and tea.

Reservations should be made payable to Athens Ladies Civitan Club and mailed to Elizabeth McDowell, 22280 Indian Trace, Athens, AL, 35613-2879. For more information, call 874-7490 or 874-2578.

Country Cousins

The Country Cousins met recently to celebrate the group’s 20th reunion. Zettie Atkinson hosted the 37 members and guests who attended at the Fairview Community Center.

Joining in the festivities were Janice Orr Vinson; Billie Hutchinson; Idalene Singleton; Wilma Boger; Mildred Johnson; Hazel Brown; Vera Horsley; Lucille Roddam; Sandy McClain; Brandi Favors; Eleanor Garrison; Inez Borden; Edna and Bob White; Brooke Alexander; Sandra York; Kodi York; Brenna York; William Salas; Melanie Vela-Astrain; Carina Reza-Vela; Christopher Reza-Vela; Edna Earle James and grandson Will Mayfield; Johnny W. Self; Jimmie Quattlebaum; Evalene Orr; Janice Vinson; and Hoyt and Dot Maples.

Donna and Ray Weeks, along with the Shadow Mountain Band, provided the entertainment. Members of the band included Alfred Jones; Theola and Tootsie Russell; Evalene and Jack Crutchfield; and Bonnie Cleghorn.

Country Cousins met for the first time March 8, 1987, at the Borden home. As the brainchild of sister Singleton, Borden joined in and the two begin calling cousins from Morgan and surrounding counties. With a blend of first, second and third cousins and spouses, this group that began with sandwiches and hand sewing in different homes and has relocated to the Community Center where everyone enjoys family favorite recipes. They have published two cookbooks and are discussing a third edition.

The next meeting will be hosted by Borden and Garrison.

Fashion reservations

Remember to make your reservation for the April 26 Styles & Statements fashion show and box lunch that benefits the Community Free Clinic of Decatur and Morgan County.

It’s been great “chattin” with ya!
