CHATTERBOX

‘Entertaining on the Go’ at Spring Fling
Wendy’s word
I had no idea what she was trying to say. My 2-year-old niece was determined to explain, but I did not understand. She had to take my hand and show me.
The world is, unfortunately, that way. We oftentimes don’t see what others see, or hear what others hear or we fail to interpret life the way someone else views it.
As we have seen this past week, we exist in a complicated, troubling time. Let us not be afraid to take the hand of a friend, a neighbor or even a stranger and try to comprehend the point they want to get across. May we open our eyes, our ears, our hearts to the world and the languages around us before it’s too late and before devastation strikes us blindsided.
Have a blessed day, taking time to listen to those around you.
Now let’s see what the “chatter” is for today ...
Sims at Spring Fling
Decatur’s Betty Sims, representing the Southern Scrumptious Culinary School, will be the featured guest at the annual Spring Fling in Cullman on Wednesday. Sponsored by the Pilot Club, the 15th annual event is at the Cullman Civic Center, 510 Fifth St. S.W., and is scheduled each year in conjunction with National Professional Administrative Day.
Doors will open at 11:30 a.m., with the program “Entertaining on the Go” beginning at noon. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis, with no reserved seats.
A food and nutrition major from the University of Tennessee, Sims has enriched her expertise by attending cooking seminars with such cooking celebrities as Peter Krump, Pamela Johns and Martha Stewart.
Club President Carole Garrett says, “She looks forward to a great attendance at the event and reminds everyone that all proceeds will go to further Pilot Club projects in the community.”
Tickets are $20 and may be purchased from the Cullman Museum, Cullman Savings Bank, Peoples Bank, Compass Bank downtown or any club member. Tickets will not be available at the door.
Highlights of the event will be door prizes and favorite recipes to take home. Following the cooking program, Sims will be available to autograph her cookbooks.
The event chairwoman is Libby Burks, with Beverly Wilkerson and Thelma Freeman handling publicity. Ticket chairwomen are Loretta Smith and Cala Warhurst. For ticket information, call 737-7118 or 736-1164.
AARP
Morgan County Chapter 234 of AARP met recently with Don Thomas, president, calling the meeting to order.
Vice President Norma Jean Melder introduced special guest Sgt. Martin of the Decatur Police Department’s Crime Prevention Unit. His remarks focused on safety and several tips were shared such as shopping with a friend instead of alone, parking in well-lit areas in direct line to the entrance of a building and storing money and credit cards somewhere other than wallet or purse on out-of-town trips. Also, beware of strangers trying to give something away, keep home doors and garages locked and do not open the door to strangers after dark; instead, talk through the door.
A brief business meeting included a report from Stella White, treasurer, saying that a $100 donation was made to Meals on Wheels. Mary Phillips won the door prize.
The club’s meeting Tuesday will feature ventriloquist Stanley Clark and his pal Charlie. The public is invited.
