Celebrity waiters raise $3,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters

Wendy's word

I guess this is it. This week marked the end of another school year with summer ahead and a new chapter of life for many. For us, it was the end of elementary school for my daughter.

We have been counting down the days until fifth-grade graduation and have been so excited about the summer ahead. I bounced in with bells Wednesday morning for the awards program and ceremony, and then absolutely lost it. I cried all day. Emotional mom could not get a hold of it.

I am right there with many when it comes to looking ahead and, in some sense of the word, wishing the time away. This was a hard lesson for me, but at least it clicked with seven years still to go until her high school graduation.

Cherish the days, hold on to the moments and rejoice in the time you have with your sweet little ones. It will be gone before you know it.

Now let's see what the "chatter" is for today ...

Celebrity waiters

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Morgan County held its Cele-brity Waiting Game on May 21, at Logan's Roadhouse in Decatur, where the $3,000 raised through tips will benefit the more than 250 children currently served.

Celebrity waiters this year included WDRM's Dan and Dingo, Coroner Russ Beard, Probate Judge Greg Cain, Revenue Commissioner Amanda Scott, Jim Page, Sen. Arthur Orr, Police Chief Kenneth Collier, Carl Cole, Demond Garth, Rep. Bill Dukes, Rep. Jody Letson, Paula Stephenson, Sheriff Greg Bartlett, Billy Miles, Carolyn Orr, Circuit Judge Sherrie Paler, Mario Davis, Miranda Ball, Charles Langham, and County Commissioner Jeff Clark.

Top tip earners were Page, Langham and Stephenson.

BBBS is a 100-year-old mentoring agency that has served children of Morgan, Lawrence, Winston and Cullman counties for more than 20 years.

Telephone Pioneers

Members of the Telephone Pioneers-Decatur Council recently volunteered as servers at the Athens-Limestone County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program's 34th anniversary celebration luncheon. The event was at the First United Methodist Church Beasley Center.

Members attending included Mabel Smartt, Kathy Jones, Glendora James, Janet Smith, Myrtle Tanksley, Shirley Griffin, Jean Phillips, Oneda Webster, Imogene Gray, Evelyn Howard, Barbara Huber, Ruth Keenum and Margarette Russell.

The Telephone Pioneers, a national nonprofit organization, is made up of both active and retired employees of telephone companies, such as BellSouth and AT&T.

Projects include sponsoring Camp BlueBird for cancer patients 18 and older, sponsoring one of the Salvation Army's Angel Tree children at Children, purchasing and preparing goodie bag items for Meals on Wheels for Valentines Day, distributing Easter baskets for underprivileged children, furnishing and serving refreshments for Decatur High School's Development School Prom, and selling Pioneer cookbooks at Moulton's Apple Fest and at Athen's Fiddler's Convention. Monthly meetings are the last Thursday of each month at McCollum's Catfish Restaurant in Decatur.

History camp

Children can step back in time and take an exciting journey through Decatur's history during the Past Times summer history camp for elementary-age students. Campers will watch history come alive through music, games, crafts, dance, stories and visits from special guests. Sessions are held each Tuesday, beginning June 12, from 10 a.m. until noon, with each date focusing on a different era in local history.

Sessions include Frontier Days (early settlement) on June 12, Civil War on June 19 and Victorian Twin Cities on June 26. Session repeats in the same order July 10, July 17 and July 24. Advance registration is required and class sizes are limited. Reservations are made on a first come, first served basis. Program fees are $5 per session and cover snacks and supplies.

For further information, call 350-5060.

AARP

Don Thomas called things to order at a recent meeting of Chapter 234 of Morgan County AARP and led with the pledge.

The devotional was given by John Cromeans and featured an excerpt from "Chicken Soup for the Soul" entitled, "All I ever needed to know I learned from kindergarten."

Members and guests enjoyed a covered dish meal followed by special entertainment provided by ventriloquist Rev. Stanley Clark and his friend "Charlie."

A native of Tennessee, member Sandy Phillips spoke on coming to Alabama in 1984 with her husband to operate Cavalier Tours. She shared information on upcoming tours to Alaska; Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Branson, Mo.; Atlanta; and Nashville. Cromeans gave details about the Elder Hostel program, trips, tours and Riverboat travel.

Pageant

Eva School will host Miss Summertime Pageant for ages 2-14 on June 9 at 10 a.m. Registration is $20 for casual wear competition, $30 for the beauty walk, and $5 each for most beautiful and most photogenic. Each participant will receive a prize. Entry deadline is June 1. Proceeds will help the school's basketball team go to camp. Contact April Shadden, 796-0092.

That's all for now. It's been great "chattin" with ya!

Let me know what is going on in your little corner of the world. If it's special to you and features any of the great people who live in our community, then it will make a great Chatterbox item. Just e-mail me at ddchatterbox@yahoo.com, or call me at 350-5730. I look forward to hearing from you.
