Annual Walk for Life to raise money for pregnancy center
Wendy’s word
The lazy days of summer — you just have to love them. The season is here for a brief moment, and with trips and countless activities, the days seem to fly by before our eyes.
Whether your days are busy or relaxed, enjoy the moments. Have a beautiful and blessed summer. That’s what I’m planning to do.
Now let’s see what the “chatter” is for today ...
Walk for Life
Saturday should be the perfect day to get outside and enjoy a summer day. Join the Pregnancy Resource Center in celebrating 20 years of changing lives with the annual Walk for Life.
Walkers will get started at 9 a.m. at the splash golf facility at Wilson Morgan Park. Excitement will continue until noon with free games, face painting, food and inflatables. All walkers will receive a T-shirt.
The Pregnancy Resource Center is committed to helping women in our community who face a pregnancy-related crisis enabling them to choose life for their unborn babies. The center’s services are free. All proceeds raised in the walk will go directly into the ministry for resources.
For more information, call 355-3828 or visit 2114 Central Parkway, Suite H, in Decatur.
Daughters
Members of the Joe Wheeler Chapter 291 United Daughters of the Confederacy recently attended the dedication of the Alabama Museum of the Confederate Soldier at Confederate Memorial Park in Marbury, 437 County Road 63.
Lee Sentell, treasurer of the Alabama Historical Commission and director of the Alabama Bureau of Tourism and Travel, said the museum would play a large role in tourism for the state. Bill Rambo, site director of the park, welcomed about 1,000 supporters, re-enactors, descendants of veterans and state officials to the museum opening.
Special recognition was given to Lorraine Ennis, president of the Alabama Division of the UDC; Leonard Wilson, commander of the Alabama Division SCV; and the descendants of the soldiers’ home residents and the staff.
Local members who attended were Glendora James, president; Kay McCarley, vice-president; Betty Lovvorn, third vice-president; Mavis Kimbrell, secretary; and Judy Blackwell, recorder of military crosses.
Survivor scholarships
Four local cancer survivors from Morgan and Limestone Counties were awarded college scholarships by the Mid-South Division of the American Cancer Society.
Jon Haley of Trinity, Kate McCloskey of Athens, David Pagleno of Athens and Lisa Waller of Decatur each received $1,000 at events at Founders Park in Decatur and at Sportsplex in Athens.
Scholarships are awarded based on financial need, leadership, academic achievement and community service. Students must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher and be accepted to an accredited school. Candidates must be younger than 25, have had a cancer diagnosis before age 21 and be a Mid-South resident.
“Many cancer survivors and their families find that affording college tuition is difficult after paying expenses related to cancer treatment,” said Carlette Hines, survivorship director. “This scholarship gives many students the extra funds they need to go to college and pursue their dreams. Some of them would not be able to attend if not for our scholarship program.”
For more information about this scholarship program, call the American Cancer Society at (800) ACS-2345 or visit www.cancer.org.
