Luncheon raises cancer awareness, money for Brooke Hill foundation

Wendy’s word

At Miss Alabama this past week the talk was all about who sparkled. It wasn’t about shiny makeup, glowing tans or glittery gowns, but about the contestant who shined from within.

Inner beauty radiates a sense of confidence, an assurance of preparedness and a peace that our hearts are where they need to be. It’s a beauty like no other, and there is absolutely no way to “fake” it if it’s not sincere.

Unfortunately, results and opinions in the pageant world are strictly based on a panel of five, and many times contestants can “put on” and try to be something they are not — it happens all the time. However, I believe we will find that in the real world, those who have true beauty will always rise to the top and find their way to the winner’s circle.

May you sparkle today from your heart and soul, where it truly counts.

Now let’s see what the “chatter” is for today ...

Brooke Hill luncheon

“It’s not about the fashion, it’s about the information,” said Juanita Healy, mother of Brooke Hill, a Decatur wife and mother who lost her fight to ovarian cancer two years ago at age 32. “After all, that’s what Brooke would have wanted.”

Hill would have been proud, as more than 80 guests heard the message about the warning signs and early detection methods of this dreaded disease. The medical panel discussion was made possible by Dr. J. Michael Straughn Jr. and Beth Hosmer.

The second annual spring event raised $3,786 for the Brooke Hill Ovarian Cancer Awareness Foundation, established by family and friends with the sole purpose of funding events to raise awareness of the symptoms and treatments available for ovarian cancer.

A silent auction and live art auction were highlights of the “My Body, My Style, the Focus is on You” event, as well as the delicious lunch provided by Burningtree Country Club. Volunteer models showed fashions provided by Nettie’s Place, Goody 2 Shoes and Eloise and Henry.

The next fundraising event in memory of Hill, the third annual Brooke Hill Run for Awareness, will be Aug. 25. Mark your calendars now and look for more information to follow.

LEGO build

Looking for something fun for your little ones? Check this out. Habitat for Humanity is hosting a LEGO build for children, kindergarten through fifth grade, with a goal of educating them about the program.

The LEGO build is Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Habitat Restore on Wilson Street Northeast.

The cost is $7 and will include lunch. Only 25 spots are available, so hurry and contact Erica Cain at 308-1160.

ABWA

The next American Business Women’s Association meeting will feature fabulous auction items, fun and food, so don’t miss out on the excitement Thursday night.

The public is invited to a fundraiser to further the scholarship fund. Central United Methodist Church on Sixth Avenue Southeast will host the event, with Rep. Bill Dukes serving as guest auctioneer.

You can bid on items, including a chocolate goody basket, decorative items, artwork, gift certificates, tourist attraction tickets, a custom-painted table and much more, at the silent auction beginning at 5 p.m. The live auction will kick off at 7 p.m., with food served throughout the event.

Advance tickets are $10 at Tammy Eddy Antiques or Decatur Convention and Visitors Bureau, or $15 at the door.

For more information or tickets, call Diane Scanland at 566-9268, Susan Garner at 355-4482 or Sandra Rost at 353-9546.

Herb Society

With Anne Edmunds, president, getting things started, the Morgan County Herb Society opened June 6 with passages of Scripture that included herbal references.

Four charter members were present — Maud Brooks, Nancy Crosier, Christine Grove and Dot Maples — to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the society’s founding.

Julie Dutton provided a cake commemorating the beginnings of the group.

While all members contribute to the running of the Herb Society, the president for 2007-08 is Sylvia Walker; vice president is Julie Dutton; secretary is Nancy Crosier; treasurer is Judi Owens; and newsletter editor is Dutton.

Guest Elise Landrum was welcomed, and Judi Owens presented a hand-painted watering can to outgoing president Edmunds.

Chris Keenum, owner of Keenum’s Problem Wildlife Control, was guest speaker and shared how his wife got him started in the business of trapping animals and birds when they are creating a nuisance for homeowners or businesses. He further explained that he now takes care of problem “critters” across North Alabama, including Huntsville Airport. He has handled everything from alligators to bats and has even had to corral an ostrich.

Members expressed a special thanks to Christine Grove for introducing the speaker.

Anyone interested in herbs is welcome to join the group for its meeting on the first Wednesday of the month at 10:30 a.m. at the Alabama Extension office, 3120 Alabama 36 W. in Hartselle. No July meeting is scheduled.

For more information, call 773-2549.

That’s all for now. It’s been great “chattin” with ya! Let me know what is going on in your little corner of the world. If it’s special to you and features any of the great people who live in our community, then it will make a great Chatterbox item. Just e-mail me at ddchatterbox@yahoo.com, or call me at 350-5730. I look forward to hearing from you.
