Decorate your bikes red, white and blue for the Spirit parade
Wendy's word My summer flick pick is "Evan Almighty." It is, without a doubt, a great movie with a touching message. The film, which stars Steve Carell and Morgan Freeman, takes a modern day look at the building of Noah's Ark. Sounds farfetched, I know, but the message really hits home, reminding viewers that God ultimately holds the plans for our lives. Our personal plans? Well, those are just hilarious because we are not as in control as we think we are. Great for viewers of all ages, children will enjoy the countless animal scenes (two by two, of course), while adults will reflect on where their priorities are. It's a fun time of laughs and life lessons. Hope you enjoy. Now let's see what the "chatter" is for today ... Spirit parade Calling all children 12 years and younger. Don't forget the Spirit Parade coming up Wednesday in conjunction with the Spirit of America Festival. Decorate your bicycles, wagons, strollers, tricycles and wheelchairs in a festive patriotic theme and join in the fun. Beginning at T.C. Almon Recreation Center, registration is at 9:30 a.m. The parade will travel to the Spirit of America stage at 10 a.m., followed with prizes awarded to the grand winner, first, second, and third runners-up. The first 100 children to register will receive a free T-shirt and free chicken minis. The Children's Spirit Parade is sponsored by First American Bank, Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q, Chick-fil-A, Pepsi and Wyker's Toys. Set for July 3-4 at Point Mallard Park, the Spirit of America Festival features the Miss Point Mallard Pageant, Spirit Idol competition, presentation of the Audie Murphy Patriotism Award and other freedom awards, family games, live music, children's inflatables, food and craft vendors and a huge fireworks display on the night of the Fourth, sponsored by Parkway Medical Center. Admission is free. For more information, contact the Decatur-Morgan County Convention & Visitors Bureau at (800) 524-6181, 350-2028 or visit its Web site at www .decaturcvb.org. Country Cousins Vera Horsely and Lucille Roddam hosted a recent meeting of the Country Cousins at the Fairview Community Center with 10 members in attendance. Those enjoying the day were Billie Hutchison and her son and driver Dennis Hutchison, Johnny Self, Evalene Orr, Mildred Johnson, Ray Weeks, Hoyt Maples and Dot Maples. The next meeting will be hosted by Hutchison and Johnny McElroy. Davis home tour Members of the Joe Wheeler Chapter 291 UDC, Decatur, took a recent day trip to Smyrna, Tenn., to the historic Davis home. Built in 1820, the home rests on 168 acres of farmland and is the burial site of the Confederate hero, Sam Davis, hung by Union forces in Pulaski, Tenn. Chapter members included attending included Glendora James, Kathy Jones, Rita Birdsong, Linda Edwards, Kay McCarley, Judy Blackwell, Mavis Kimbrell, Sheron Terry and guest Melissa Taylor. Also attending were Sarah Elizabeth Hickman of the Capt. James Madison Sparkman Chapter UDC, Columbia, Tenn., and Ellen Garrison, member of the Amelia Gayle Gorgas Chapter, Tuscaloosa. The day included an informative tour of the museum, home and grounds and concluded with members marking the Davis grave with a Confederate flag.
Habitat home with cast of ‘Guiding Light’
We hear about houses going up through Habitat for Humanity almost every day, where volunteers come together offering new homes to families.
Melody Odom Davis, a former Decatur resident, entered a contest to help with Habitat following Hurricane Katrina and won. What’s the catch? Nothing, except the prize is traveling to New Orleans on July 14, along with husband Jim of Gulf Shores, to build a home with the cast of Guiding Light.
Lots of memories and surprises are surely in store after spending time with this all-star soap opera cast. We will look forward to hearing how this building project turns out.
That's all for now. It's been great "chattin" with ya!
