Arrr ye ready for some pirates?

Wendy’s word

It was definitely worth it. I write about reunions all the time, but last weekend I attended my 20th, and it was amazing! What a ball it was to catch up with friends and long-lost classmates. I would have to say it was one of the best times I have had in a while.

After trying desperately to talk myself out of going, we made the trip to Atlanta. A little nudge just kept saying, “Don’t miss it!” I can honestly say I can’t imagine if I had.

To fellow reunion-goers, I hope your time back together is as special as mine. Most of all, to students today, cherish those special times together. Make the most of every moment, realizing that life is just too short not to “live, laugh and love.”

Now let’s see what the “chatter” is for today ...

Point Mallard Pirate Day

A pirate is coming to the J. Gilmer Blackburn Aquatic Center. Join the fun Saturday for Point Mallard Pirate Day, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Themed games and entertainment will be featured from 1 to 4 p.m., along with a buried treasure hunt, cannonball contest, relay races and much more.

Admission is $15, ages 12 to adult; $10, ages 5-11; and children ages 4 and younger are free. The first 100 children will receive a free pirate eye patch.

Dan Meyer, aka Cap’n Cutless, will wow guests with his amazing sword-swallowing feats, as well as introduce his blue and gold macaw parrot. He eats fire and swallows solid steel swords, blades, sabers, bayonets, rapiers, cutlasses and other objects from 15 to 30 inches in length, and up to eight swords at once.

Meyes, a Hartselle resident, is a two-time Guinness World Record holder for sword swallowing, including being the first person to swallow a sword under water.

He describes himself as a “Christian David Copperfield” who combines real feats with a powerful message instead of tricks and illusions.

He has toured nationally with Brooks and Dunn’s Neon Circus, including Rascal Flatts, Trick Pony, Dwight Yoakum, Cletus T. Judd and others.

For more information, call Julianne Lowman, Decatur Parks and Recreation and Point Mallard Park marketing coordinator, at 341-4903.

Mission Makeover

It’s time! An evening spectacular, culminating with the reveal of this year’s Mission Makeover winner, will kick off Saturday night at the Princess Theatre Center for the Performing Arts. Make plans to attend this time of fun, food and great entertainment. All we know about this year’s makeover is they call her “Cat,” but you will be one of the first to see her. The reveal is at 7:45 p.m.

Doors open at 6 with complimentary hors d’oeuvres prepared by Jackie Grimsley of the Casual Gourmet. You will also want to throw your name in for some amazing silent auction items, including men and women’s diamonds rings, a week at a condo in Fort Walton Beach, lasik eye surgery, autographed Alabama, Auburn and Tennessee memorabilia and restaurant gift certificates. One special guest will also win a mini makeover, including a contribution by each member of the Mission Makeover team of Dr. Stephanie Teichmiller, Dr. Chris Teichmiller, Dr. Ben Light, Glenn Mitchell of Red Jasper Salon and Spa and Carole Foret, photographer.

The night will close with a full concert by Jeff Cook, formerly of the band “Alabama,” and Mitch Glenn. An autograph signing will follow the concert.

All proceeds will benefit Habitat for Humanity and the Decatur Morgan County Free Clinic.

Seating is reserved, so get your tickets today at www.princesstheatre.org or by calling 340-1778.

Applications are already being accepted for next year’s Mission Makeover winner. For more information or application details, visit the Web site at www.missionmakeover.com. This could be your chance of a lifetime.

AARP

Morgan County Chapter 234 of AARP met recently with Don Thomas kicking things off with remarks entitled, “Are we there yet?”

Norma Jean Melder introduced special guest speaker Tina Weeks, senior adviser of Senior Circle at Parkway Medical Center.

Weeks spoke on the program and activities of the Senior Circle organization. She also announced that the only accredited chest pain center in the Alabama is now open at Parkway. After her program, she closed with three vocal numbers, including “There’s Power in the Blood.”

New chapter member Tom VanAtta was introduced. He is also serving as an instructor in the AARP Driver Safety Program and encouraged everyone to take the course as a way to brush up on driving skills. Program participants are also eligible for a discount on their auto insurance.

Ray Holton, AARP volunteer team leader for Morgan County, announced that of the 52 AARP chapters in Alabama, the Morgan County chapter ranked third in the state. Placement is based on activities during the calendar year. A certificate was presented, along with a $50 to the chapter.

Guest speakers Marilyn Geron and Sue Brantley of the Morgan County Mental Health Association will present the program at the next meeting this Tuesday. The public is invited.

For more information, call Mae Garner at 306-1010.
