Mission team travels to Moldova

Wendy’s word

I have a problem with a song. It’s “Me and God” by Josh Turner. If you’ve listened to the lyrics you’ve heard “we’re like two peas in a pod.” What in the world is with that statement? It’s crazy to think anyone could compare to the magnificence of God. That’s just slap insane!

I’ll agree it’s a catchy little tune, but the words are just not right. “There ain’t nothin’ that can’t be done by me and God” and “we’re a team, me and God” — are we so full of ourselves to think that God needs our help or that he can’t do something without our input? Goodness gracious!

If you don’t see anything wrong with this country hit, ask yourself this — where were you when the heavens were made, when was the last time you sent a thunderstorm, or better yet, created a beautiful and miraculous newborn in a mother’s womb? I am a big country music fan, but there are songs we have to question.

On a positive note, let’s see what the “chatter” is for today ...

Mission trip

Summer is not always about rest and relaxation. For many it’s about using the few weeks to make a positive difference in the lives of others. That was just the focus for a mission team from First Bible Church. The team traveled to Moldova for the week of July 21-29. Team members Mike and Sheree Hutchens, Scottie Hubbard, Sam Barnett, Stephen Kirkes, Doug Mote, Joe Cimino, Shawn Martin, Brad Richards and Chris Thomas left Decatur with a commitment to share a light — a ray of hope, so to speak — with individuals on the other side of the world.

The primary goal while in Moldova was to help with construction on a local church. Hubbard explained, “There is currently a place for the church to meet, so we were updating and working on buildings for additional space for the women’s programs and the youth group.”

Hard work didn’t stop there. Another visit on the trip was to the city of Telenesti, where team members spent the day at an orphanage. The time was full of fun activities with the children, as well as much needed repairs to several of the campus buildings.

Team members agreed that the trip was a good one. The members shared that the trip was eye-opening. They said they now realize the good things they often take for granted in everyday life.

Fundraiser

“Southern Nights and Broadway Lights” is a new fundraiser planned Sept. 21 in Decatur.

The Mental Health Center of North Central Alabama Inc. is planning the event to help support permanent housing for homeless, mentally ill adults in this area, according to Executive Director Marie Hood.

This event will include Broadway and gospel renditions by local performers, along with storytelling. Jazz music with a silent auction and gourmet desserts will precede the main event.

The center needs to raise matching funds for a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development $1.3 million grant it received, and construction of housing is scheduled to start later this year, according to board Chairman Jim Denton of Decatur.

Corporate and other sponsors are being sought for the evening, which will be held at the Princess Theatre Center for the Performing Arts from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

To assist, contact the center at 260-7325 or 260-7351.

That’s all for now. It’s been great “chattin” with ya! Let me know what is going on in your little corner of the world. If it’s special to you and features any of the great people who live in our community, then it will make a great Chatterbox item. I look forward to hearing from you.
