Local sorority celebrates Beginning Day, sisterhood

Wendy’s word

“Mom, I am so glad God made belts,” exclaimed my 7-year-old son the other day, “otherwise I would have to walk around with my pants down.” Bless his heart! If only the rest of us would find joy in something as small as a belt.

When our culture demands we live in the right place, drive the right car, run in the right circles and brush shoulders with those who matter (according to the world’s standards!), people become lost. They become victims of the very world they are killing themselves to fit into.

Worry about the little things that truly matter in life. Make a house a home, not a showplace; and make sure you are comfortably warm — and not simply wrapped in a name brand — as the temperatures, finally, turn a bit cooler. Be appreciative and thankful for something small — like your belt. Have a blessed day.

Now let’s see what the “chatter” is for today ...

Beginning Day

With a new season upon us, it seems the perfect time for new beginnings. That is exactly why the Xi Beta Upsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Phi celebrated Beginning Day recently at the Decatur Country Club and presented this year’s theme, “Sing a Song of Sisterhood.”

Anna Troutt hosted the day, which featured a buffet lunch.

Those present were Nancy Beaty, Susan Chi, Jackie Higdon, Jan Hooper, Marla Lockard, Sue McClellan, Nancy Pett, Faye Pyatt, Cookie Register, Diane Robichaud, Pat Shaffer, Marcia Silva, Mary Sloan and Troutt. Aileen Duff was unable to attend.

Before leaving, secret sister gifts were exchanged.

Family fun

This afternoon should be the perfect day for family fun. Join the Girl Scouts at Kaleidoscope — a fun, family event today at Point Mallard Park from 1 to 4 p.m.

The day’s activities will include many things centered around arts, science, math, technology, community service and healthy living, such as picture mosaics, kaleidoscopes, journeling, a fitness challenge, shakers and trombones. Attendees will also get a taste of international dancing, animal games and straw rockets.

With things planned for “kids” of all ages, the entire family is invited. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

For more information on the Girl Scouts, call (800) 410-8338 or visit the Web site at www.girlscoutsofnorthalabama.org.

Kickoff at the Princess

Things won’t be quiet at the Princess Theatre for the Performing Arts on Monday night. There’ll be a celebration going on, and things will get started at 6:30 p.m.

The new season gets under way with festivities including a tribute to the legendary Delmore Brothers, two of country music’s biggest stars from the ’30s and members of the Country Music Hall of Fame. An interesting local connection is that they are also great uncles to two area public officials — City Council member Gary Hammon and state Rep. Micky Hammon, R-Decatur.

Dr. Randy Cross, English professor at Calhoun Community College, will serve as commentator.

This will be a great time to learn more about the upcoming show schedule, listen to some great music, win tickets, and of course, munch on some popcorn! Tickets are only $2 and will be available in advance or at the door.

For more information, contact Lindy Ashwander, 350-1745, or visit the Web site at www.princesstheatre.org.

Women’s Chamber

Another organization kicking things off this fall is Women’s Chamber. The September luncheon will be Friday at Decatur Country Club beginning at noon. Under the leadership of this year’s president, Lori Ho-Tung, the group promises exciting plans for the year ahead.

Sara Page is in charge of programs this year and has secured an impressive lineup beginning with a discussion of women’s health and wellness issues. Tina Weeks, representing Parkway Medical Center’s Healthy Woman Program will speak, followed by Dr. Linda Gilliam of the Women’s Pavilion. Parkway will host the meeting.

Tammy Eddy, membership chairwoman, will introduce new members Jami Buckner, Yvonkia Davidson, Dee Farr, Lori Ray and Lynn Reeves. The membership committee has been busy making plans to increase membership and urge current members to invite prospective members to attend a luncheon meeting and check out Women’s Chamber for themselves.

Table decorations will be designed by Ross Raley, and door prizes will be presented.

The cost for the lunch is $11. For more information or to make a reservation, call Brenda Hartman, 351-6581, or Ronette Gravitt, 355-7693, by Tuesday. Any cancellations should be made no later than Wednesday.

That’s all for now. It’s been great “chattin” with ya! Let me know what is going on in your little corner of the world. If it’s special to you and features any of the great people who live in our community, then it will make a great Chatterbox item. Just e-mail me at ddchatterbox@yahoo.com, or call me at 350-5730. I look forward to hearing from you.
