Stay in Decatur to say 'Roll Tide,' and watch the game with alumni

Wendy’s word

What efforts do we make to break through our cultural barriers? I ran in to grab Chinese food the other day, and, as I was taking a break to shovel it in, noticed an employee watching TV. It wasn’t unusual that he was watching, just that the show was in another language, one which I did not understand.

I was entertained as he laughed and seemed to respond to this program in a positive way. All I could see were the characters on screen in a type of “kung fu” match.

Whether our cultural barriers are language based or an entire way of life, my hope is that we will take steps to bridge those gaps in our society, finding an avenue to communicate with and understand each other.

As I was leaving, I did learn one thing for sure. A simple smile was exchanged and seemed to be one small step in the right direction.

Now let’s see what the “chatter” is for today ...

Watch game with Alabama alumni

Don’t want to drive to Tuscaloosa to yell “Roll Tide”? Mark your calendar today and make plans to enjoy the SEC match-up between Alabama and Ole Miss with fellow fans here in Decatur on Oct. 13.

The Alabama Alumni Association of Morgan County will hold its fall meeting one hour prior to kickoff at the Pointe Mallard Clubhouse, with food and prizes available. Put on your Crimson Tide colors, and come out for a great time. Single memberships are $20, $30 for families. Alumni and friends of the university are welcome to join.

Also serving on the alumni board are Curtis Wofford, vice president; David Scott, treasurer; Kathy Littrell, secretary; and Mac Crane, executive committee chairman.

For questions or more information, contact John Sturges, president, at 280-8240 or jlsturge@bellsouth.net.

Austin Band scores high, selling fruit

The Austin High School Black Bear Marching Band earned superior ratings and finished third in the 2007 South Central Marching Classic Festival in Birmingham.

All units including drum major, color guard and percussion brought home top ratings at the contest at Homewood High School.

Among senior band members accepting the awards were Rachael Adamsky, Amy McGuire, Rachel Whitte, Troy Campbell, Matthew Robinson and Kayla Cowley.

The band’s fruit sale is going on through Thursday. You can get grapefruit, navels, tangelos, Hamlin (juice), or a mixed box of all the oranges. Prices are $22 for a large box or $17 for a small box.

Proceeds will assist the students as they travel to Philadelphia and New York in November, as well as help to fund additional music, stands and band equipment.

Anyone interested in purchasing fruit should contact an Austin High band member.

UNA pledge

Another pledge is in. Christina Dorrance of Decatur, went Zeta Tau Alpha at the University of North Alabama.

Fall booths available

If you have a business, make a craft or promote a product, join in the fun at Walter Jackson Elementary School’s upcoming Fall Festival on Oct. 27. Spaces are now available for rent to showcase your handcrafted items or business services.

For a $25 fee, booths can stay open throughout the festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

For more information, call Kim Barrera at 584-8169.

Herb Society

Julie Dutton got things kicked off at a recent get-together of the Morgan County Herb Society.

Christine Grove shared a note from the son of the late Donna Bentley. Donna Turney brought the bounty of her garden — flowers for table decorations and eggplants to share — while Grove brought handmade cards for the group to see and purchase.

Special guests Marcus Garner from the extension office and Joyce Melson were introduced, followed by speaker Susi Freeze.

Freeze, a local Alabama beekeeper, talked about the joys and trials of beekeeping. She also shared a recipe for making herb-flavored honey. Lunch was served by Maude Brooks, Donna Turney and Avis Wallace.

The Morgan County Herb Society meets the first Wednesday of every month at the Alabama Extension Office, 3120 Alabama 36 W. in Hartselle. The next meeting will be Nov. 7. Anyone interested in herbs is welcome to attend. For more information call 773-2549.

That’s all for now. It’s been great “chattin” with ya!

Let me know what is going on in your corner of the world. If it’s special to you and features any of the great people who live in our community, then it will make a great Chatterbox item. Just e-mail me at ddchatterbox@yahoo.com, or call me at 350-5730. I look forward to hearing from you.
