St. Ann’s gears up for holiday auction
Wendy’s word
“Is the future real?”
That question came out of the blue the other day from my 7-year-old son. It’s really a tough question when you think about it, because in many ways we constantly prepare for tomorrow, yet there is a never a guarantee that another day will come our way.
My response was: “There’s really no way to tell what the future will bring or whether or not it is ‘real.’ We can certainly make guesses and predictions on what we think may be.
“We just have to trust, ‘Little Man,’ and believe that a new day will be our gift. Most importantly, when that gift arrives, our hope should be that we are used in a special way and for a special purpose.”
Now let’s see what the “chatter” is for today...
Holiday auction
Plans are gearing up for the ninth annual St. Ann’s Holiday Auction on Nov. 30 at Burningtree Country Club. The event, from 6 until 11 p.m., will feature silent and live auctions, along with a raffle.
Tickets are now for sale for the event, which is sponsored by the St. Ann School Advisory Board. They are $65 per couple if purchased before Friday; after Friday they will be $75 per couple. Tickets include dinner for two.
To get your tickets, call the school office at 353-6543.
Fraternity pledges
Several local young men have gone Greek at Birmingham-Southern College. Pledging fraternities are Will Breland from Decatur, Jeremy Craig from Athens and Rand Hutchison of Priceville, all of whom chose Sigma Chi, and Caleb Story from Decatur, who joined Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
Congratulations to these new pledges.
Decatur Newcomers
Newcomers of Decatur, with successful results from their recent auction that raised more than $3,700 for local children’s charities, are ready to meet again on Wednesday at Burningtree Country Club. Anyone new to the community is welcome to join; the group will gather at 10:30 a.m.
The meeting will focus on holiday festivities and decorations, featuring a presentation by florist Ross Railey.
Call Stacie Thompson, 751-4773, for reservations or more information.
Women’s Chamber
Before the holiday season kicks into high gear, relax and enjoy a Thanksgiving meal with friends and business colleagues at the Decatur Women’s Chamber of Commerce luncheon meeting on Friday. Hospice of the Valley will be the host this month.
Join in the anniversary celebration of the Women’s Chamber of Commerce, which has been an active service organization since 1939.
Program chairwoman Sara Page has lined up officer Dave Williams of the Decatur Police Department to talk about holiday safety, as well as sharing tips on safety and self-defense throughout the year.
Gail Holbert will have all four volumes of the Women’s Chamber cookbooks available. They also can be purchased at Tammy Eddy Antiques, Sam Frank & Moore, and Jimmy Smith Jewelers.
Women’s Chamber meets each month, September through May, on the third Friday at Decatur Country Club. The cost of the luncheon is $11.
Make your reservations by Tuesday by calling Brenda Hartman at 351-6581 or Ronette Gravitt at 560-0696.
Hartselle Newcomers
The Hartselle Newcomers Club met recently with co-presidents Ruth Carlin and Sandy Johnson kicking things off. Newcomer Jennie Easterling, a guest of Sue Kalber, was introduced and welcomed. She and her husband moved to Hartselle last January from South Carolina. Member Donna Pearce gave the blessing prior to lunch.
Michelle Duryea, activities and field trip director, reported on several upcoming events and trips, including the presentation of “Steel Magnolias” by the College Street Players on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Hartselle Fine Arts Center.
The group is also planning a trip to Lynchburg on Friday, featuring stops at the Jack Daniel’s Distillery, the Lynchburg Cake and Candy Company, the Lynchburg Pottery and Gift Gallery, the Pepper Patch Bakery and Candy Kitchen, and Miss Mary Bobo’s Restaurant. On Dec. 8, they will head to Hartselle’s “Tour of Homes.”
For more information, or if you are interested in attending any of these events or trips, call Duryea at 773-3203.
Carol Smith with the Hartselle hospitality program talked to Newcomers about how the program works and how it is beneficial to both merchants and new residents of the area.
Dona Bonnett took home the door prize.
Any questions about Hartselle Newcomers should be directed to Carlin at 773-8802 or Johnson at 751-4540.
