ATHENS — Limestone County has a new assistant coroner.

On Monday, the County Commission approved Barry Jones as the assistant to Coroner Mike West.

Andy Jackson, who was serving as assistant coroner, said he resigned the paid position, but still will assist the coroner's office as an unpaid volunteer.

"I'm taking a break, but will still take calls as I have time," Jackson said.

Jackson also is the director of therapy service at Athens-Limestone Hospital.

Jackson said Jones is a delivery technician for the hospital's home medial equipment business.

He used to be a dispatcher for the ambulance service.

"Barry has also helped us on calls as a volunteer," Jackson said. "I guess you can say we're switching roles."

The assistant coroner makes $200 a month.
