Decatur child has surgery after dog attack
A Southwest Decatur child was in surgery at Decatur General Hospital on Saturday night after being bitten in the head and arm by a neighbor's dog.
About noon, the 3-year-old boy, who was being watched by a family friend at 1616 Second Ave. S.W., climbed a fence into an adjoining yard, police Sgt. Roger Huntzinger said.
The neighbor's cocker spaniel/chow bit the boy on his arm and the top of his head, and "some (bites) split open fairly severely," Huntzinger said.
Animal Control was called to the scene to coordinate with the Health Department and determine whether the dog had been vaccinated or needed to be quarantined.
Huntzinger said no charges are pending because the dog was in its own backyard, and the child climbed the fence.
