ATHENS — Athens police arrested a Stanford Street man Monday night for allegedly hitting an acquaintance and then shooting him in the foot.

Lt. Floyd Johnson said Theordore Roosevelt Gaines, 26, of 2101 Stanford St. is in Limestone County Jail on charges of first-degree robbery and first-degree assault. Bond is $10,000.

Johnson said witnesses and the victim accused Gaines of attacking 28-year-old Mikia Wood at Wood's mother's home on Aretha Street at about noon on Monday. Johnson said Gaines asked Wood for money and, when Wood didn't comply, Gaines allegedly pulled out a 9 mm pistol, hit him several times, took his gold necklace and shot him in the left foot.

Wood got away from the suspect and went to a neighbor's home on Stanford Street. An ambulance took Wood to Athens-Limestone Hospital.

Johnson said he had probable cause to obtain a warrant Monday afternoon. Investigators unsuccessfully searched for the gun on Interstate 565. Gaines went to the police station and was placed under arrest.
