Birmingham man linked to death of 2-year-old boy
BIRMINGHAM (AP) - A 36- year-old man was arrested and charged Saturday with capital murder in the death of a 2- year-old boy - Birmingham's 92nd homicide in 2006.
The suspect, Dexter Arrington, described by police as the boyfriend of the boy's mother, was booked in the Jefferson County Jail around 2 a.m. Saturday. He was being held without bond.
The boy, Samuel Perryman, died Thursday in the East Thomas neighborhood.
U.S. Marshal Marty Keely of Birmingham said the boy died of blunt-force trauma injuries.
The child's mother, Darlene Freeman, said she left the boy with another adult and went to work Thursday. She said she returned home and found the child dead.
"He had a knot on his head.
... He had welts on his legs," she said. "It was cruel what happened to my baby. It wasn't right."
