FALKVILLE — Falkville Town Councilman Matt Stiles continues to recuperate at home after back surgery Nov. 8 at Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham.

Stiles, 47, a counselor at Falkville Elementary School, said surgeons did a posterior spinal fusion.

He said his doctor told him that full recovery may take six months to a year. He had two other surgeries in 1987 and 1992.

"I'm having to use a walker this time, and I'm having to learn patience," he said. "I'm having trouble with muscle spasms in my left foot and calf."

Stiles is in his second term on the council after voters elected him in 2000 and re-elected him in 2004. He serves as mayor pro tem.

He is a 15-year Navy veteran and left the service as petty officer first class. He served as a nuclear technician on two nuclear submarines.
