Daikin manager's son-in-law dies in fall

BIRMINGHAM - A funeral was held Monday for the son-in-law of Daikin's local plant manager, Hugh Hillhouse of Decatur.

Thomas Joseph Thornton Jr., 47, of Vestavia Hills, assistant chief engineer at Ross Bridge Golf Resort & Spa, fell 30 feet from a ladder Thursday and later died at University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital, according to news reports.

Thornton was working outdoors on a ladder propped under a gazebo, apparently changing light bulbs, when he fell to ground level and then down two flights of stairs beneath the ga-zebo, a Ross Bridge spokesman told The Birmingham News.

Thornton is survived by his wife, Sarah Hillhouse Thornton, and two daughters. SETH BURKETT
