Athens police seek suspect from alleged robbery attempt

ATHENS — A man told police that a gun-welding stranger chased him around a van during an attempted robbery Monday night, Athens police Capt. Marty Bruce said.

The man said he walked out of La Primavera on Jefferson Street and a black male with a handgun jumped at him from behind a vehicle.

“The robber chased him around a parked van twice and then pointed the gun at a female in the van,” Bruce said.

The victim started calling police, and the robber fled without taking anything, Bruce said.

On Tuesday, the victim told police he saw the offender near McDonald’s on U.S. 31. Police have questioned a suspect but not made an arrest.
