Ex-police captain in Florence gets child porn sentence
By Seth Burkett
Former Florence police Captain Basil Kenneth Stanley was sentenced Wednesday in federal court to 84 months in prison on charges of possessing child pornography and using a computer to transport or mail child pornography.
Stanley, who was indicted in June and pleaded guilty in August, remains out on bond under strict limitations imposed by the court.
He is due to report to prison Feb. 26.
U.S. Attorney Alice H. Martin said the government objected to the court’s decision to allow Stanley to remain free on bond and the sentence, which is less than the 108 to 135 months advised by federal sentencing guidelines.
“It is disturbing that a law enforcement officer should be so brazen as to upload graphic photographs of children being raped on his police department computer,” Martin said.
Stanley, 50, will also face 20 years of supervision following his release.
Stanley was a captain with the Florence Police Department when the FBI began investigating tips provided by a photo-sharing Web site concerning online child pornography.
Florence police cooperated in the investigation.
