Police ID passenger killed in shooting
HUNTSVILLE (AP) - A passenger shot and killed by Huntsville police on Dec. 3 along with the driver in a restaurant parking lot was identified Thursday as 23-year-old Oscar Rodriquez.
Police earlier had identified the driver as Mario Lopez Ayala, also 23.
Police said the two Huntsville men were shot when the driver attempted to run over an officer in the parking lot of LaBamba Mexican Restaurant.
Two uniformed patrol officers fired the shots during an incident.
Ayala's vehicle struck another before hitting the officer, according to police.
A police department review board meets Dec. 19 while the officers are on administrative leave. The board will issue an opinion on whether the officers involved in the shooting acted within department policy.
A Madison County grand jury will also consider the evidence.
Police initially were called by security employees at the restaurant about possible drug activity inside the restaurant, Police Chief Rex Reynolds said.
