Ex-Opelika officer sentenced for child sex conviction

OPELIKA (AP) — A former Opelika police officer convicted of having sexual contact with a minor will serve nine months in the Lee County Jail.

At a hearing Thursday, Circuit Judge Jacob Walker III handed down the sentence to Everrett Keith Preer, 37, who must also serve two years of probation.

Preer, a nine-year veteran officer, was arrested in November 2005 and charged with second-degree sexual abuse involving inappropriate contact with a then 13-year-old girl in the summer of 2005.

He was suspended of his duties with the department after his arrest and later resigned.
