Steeled for safety

Nucor Steel Decatur celebrated 5 million man hours and four years without a lost-time accident by donating $40,000 worth of equipment to Decatur Fire and Rescue.

The Decatur plant is the only Nucor facility to reach this safety milestone, a safety record almost unheard of in the steel industry. Contributions included jaws of life, cutters, power units, pumps and hoses.

Mayor Don Kyle, left, and Decatur Fire Chief Charlie Johnson, center, accepted the gift. Nucor Plant Manager Rex Query, right, presented the gift. In the background are members of Nucor's emergency medical team.
