Club plans prayer vigil for slain former Athens basketball star

ATHENS — The Boys and Girls Club of Limestone County is planning a prayer vigil in memory of former Athens High basketball star Tank Beavers, killed Sunday in a shooting.

The vigil will be at the club’s building on Washington Street at 4 p.m. on Jan. 7.

Huntsville police have charged Jamal Roydrick Woods, 21, of Huntsville with murder and attempted murder for allegedly shooting and killing Beavers, 21, and shooting and injuring others at TGI Friday’s.

According to police reports, Woods allegedly shot Beavers in the head because Beavers spoke to Woods’ wife as he entered the restaurant. Woods also allegedly shot Thurston Duran Turner, 27, and Autora Frias Rogers, 24, both of Athens, who were with Beavers, and William Timothy Reliford, 33, of Hazel Green, who was sitting at the restaurant bar.

Bears was named all-state during his career with the Golden Eagles.
