VALHERMOSO SPRINGS — A two-vehicle wreck on Alabama 36 left a mother dead and her daughter hospitalized Tuesday evening.
The accident took place just east of the Valhermoso Springs Post Office at about 4:50 p.m.
State troopers said Patricia Diane Giddens, 53, of Valhermoso Springs was driving westbound and collided with an eastbound sport utility vehicle.
"It looks like the pink car crossed the double yellow line and lost control. Before the impact, they were totally sideways," said Trooper Luke Privett.
The front end of the SUV struck the driver's side of the car.
Giddens died on impact from blunt force trauma, said Coroner Russ Beard.
Giddens' daughter, Jamie Phipps, 33, of Valhermoso Springs, was trapped in the mangled vehicle's passenger seat.
Cotaco firefighters freed Phipps and an Air Evac helicopter took her to Huntsville Hospital, where she was in good condition.
Three passengers in the SUV driven by Leonard Clay Cox, 43, of Fairhope, suffered injuries, State Troopers said.
Those injured included Cox's wife, Judy Cox, 41, and two children, Riley Cox, 12, and Addison Cox, 9. Their conditions were not available at press time.
Leonard Cox and a fourth passenger, a 7-year-old girl, were not injured.
Peck Funeral Home will announce arrangements for Giddens.
