Baxley expected for Senate session convening
MONTGOMERY — Monday afternoon, Secretary of the
Senate McDowell Lee said he had no official word on whether Lt. Gov. Lucy Baxley will ga-
vel the Senate into session Tuesday.
Baxley's office staff said they fully expect her to be present to call the Senate into session when the Legislature convenes for its organizational session at noon.
If Baxley is unable to pre-side, then Lee will assume that duty until the Senate has elected its new president pro tem.
On Nov. 22, Baxley had a stroke that affected the mobility of her left arm and leg and her speech.
She underwent in-patient rehabilitation at a Birmingham rehabilitation hospital after a week at another hospital in the same city.
In an organizational session, the lieutenant governor presides until members of the Senate elect a new president pro tem.
The new pro tem presides over the remainder of the organizational session.
Lt. Gov.-elect Jim Folsom Jr. will preside over the Senate after he is sworn in at a Jan. 15 ceremony.
