Cousins leaving school killed in car accident

LEIGHTON (AP) — Two Colbert County High School students died in a one-car accident on their way home from school.

State troopers said Miesha Shuntra Hodges and her cousin, Cameron Deshawn Simpson, both 16 years old and from Leighton, were killed.

Coroner Jim Heffernan pronounced both teens dead at the scene.

Troopers said the wreck occurred at 3 p.m. Friday on County Line Road, two miles north of Leighton.

Hodges, who was driving a 2001 black Mitsubishi, apparently lost control of the vehicle and ran off the east side of the roadway, hitting a double culvert head-on.

Colbert County High School Principal Jackie Witt said everyone in the community is connected in some way. “If you’re not kin, you live close to them,’’ Witt said.

Witt said teachers and counselors called to offer any help needed.

Romelia Ford, Simpson’s aunt, said the two cousins rode to school together almost every day.

Witt said classes are out Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration and extra counselors will be at school when the students return Tuesday.
