George urges property tax for county schools

District 4 County Commissioner Stacy George is urging rural Morgan County voters to extend an existing 7.5 million property tax for county schools at a referendum today.

George said he has never voted in favor of a tax before. He believes, however, this tax is fair and will be used to support only county schools.

"It is easy for politicians to say I am against all taxes, but as elected officials we should also explain when we support something," said George. "I feel this will put a heavy burden on this school system if this does not pass. ... This is why I will be voting yes Tuesday to levy an existing tax, not a new one."

School officials say if voters do not renew the tax, they will have to cut teachers, athletics, technology and school bus routes.
