Stolen Herbie the Love Bug VW found in Mobile
MOBILE (AP) — A 1969 Volkswagen Beetle, billed as "Herbie the Love Bug," was stolen from the parking lot of an insurance agency, where it has been a popular fixture, but was found later in a driveway.
The car, painted to resemble the white Beetle race car with a mind of its own in the "Love Bug" movies, had been sold by the thief to an unwitting buyer.
"Someone had actually bought him," said Burben Sullins, the car's rightful owner. "He was just an innocent guy that lost some money."
Herbie was stolen late Saturday night or early Sunday from the parking lot of a State Farm insurance agency.
Sullins said the thief burglarized the office, taking his keys along with his laptop computer and driving off in the car.
It was spotted Monday by an alert citizen, Sullins said.
Sullins said he has used the Bug for display outside his State Farm office and for going to schools, churches and birthday parties.
"Hardly a day goes by without kids stopping to take a picture with him," Sullins said.
After about eight months of restoration, he said the new Herbie had just received the finishing touches — seat belts — last week.
