Athens woman loses nearly $1,000 to Internet scam

ATHENS — An Athens woman never meant to send nearly $1,000 to Romania.

Athens police Capt. Marty Bruce said that’s what happened when she responded to a bogus e-mail.

The e-mail said it was from Regions Bank and requested that customers update their information. Daily employees got a similar e-mail this week.

The woman, who is in her 30s, provided personal information. On Thursday, she found her account, $980, was empty.

“It had been withdrawn through a Western Union transfer to Romania,” Bruce said, adding that financial institutions do not send e-mails requesting account information. “Should anyone receive an email of this nature they should delete it,” he said.

Bruce said recovering such funds is near impossible, as is prosecuting cases where the money goes out of country.
