ARDMORE — Limestone investigators are trying to determine who kicked in the front door of an Ardmore home, drenched the inside with diesel fuel and set it on fire.
Sheriff's Department Chief Investigator Stanley McNatt said a passer-by noticed the fire at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday at 28930 Alabama 53 and called 911.
Ardmore Fire Department responded. No one was home, McNatt said. The homeowner said he was out of town working.
"The fire smothered itself out," McNatt said. "It was started in the living room but never really got going. It did minor damage."
McNatt said if the fire had time to spread, it would have destroyed the house.
"Diesel was sloshed on the walls, the curtains, it was everywhere," McNatt said.
A witness saw a pickup leave the area at the same time the passer-by discovered the fire, but investigators aren't releasing a description of that truck.
McNatt said the department has asked the state fire marshal to assist in the investigation.
