Carter prepares for CASA roast

By Holly Hollman · 340-2445

ATHENS — Longtime politician Tommy Carter has two things to say to those who will roast him Saturday.

“I’m ready. Come and give it your best shot.

“But remember, I get the last word.”

The Elkmont Democrat, who served nine terms as state representative, has agreed to take verbal jabs for the fourth annual CASA Roast.

CASA, the Care Assurance System for the Aging and Homebound, uses funds raised from the roast to provide services like transportation to medical appointments, construction of wheelchair ramps and doing minor home repairs.

Sheriff Mike Blakely, a former roastee, said it “won’t get too hot” for Carter.

“He did a lot of good deeds for us while in office,” Blakely said. “I have a lot of respect for Tommy. I think this is a time to honor as well as roast him.”

“GRITS” author Deborah Ford of Birmingham, who played softball at Elkmont for Carter, also praised her former coach.

“I’ve never seen a man do as well as he could around so many girls,” Ford said.

“He never got upset that often. My daddy died when I was 10, so I thought of him as a mentor, a father figure.”

Carter is doubtful his roasters will be that flattering when it’s roasting time.

Finding good stories

Ford did admit she will talk to her former team members about their favorite Carter stories.

“Us GRITS girls always keep a good story in our back pocket,” Ford said.
