18-month-old girl killed by Rottweiler

BREWTON (AP) — An 18-month-old Brewton girl was fatally mauled by a stray Rottweiler dog that her family had taken in until they could find its owner, authorities said Monday.

Escambia County Sheriff's Maj. Mike Murphy identified the victim of the attack about 5 p.m. Sunday as Taylor Kitlica.

He said her 21/2-year-old brother was also attacked, but survived with minor bites on his back.

Murphy said an investigation determined the girl's family found the dog wandering their neighborhood and chained it in their front yard in hopes the owner would see it. The children's parents told investigators the mauling occurred when they were not looking and the children approached the dog.

"We are asking that if anyone knows who the owner of the Rottweiler is to please come forward and contact us," Sheriff Grover Smith said.

The body of the girl, who suffered massive head injuries, was taken to the state Department of Forensic Sciences in Mobile for an autopsy.
